Chapter 15 - THE FINAL CONFRONTATION IN THE HEART OF THE RUINED EMPIRE

Savannah stood in the center of the basement room,
the blue light of the monitors illuminating her face like a digital saint.
She was holding Maya,
who was wrapped in a white blanket.
She heard Roman’s footsteps,
the heavy,
deliberate pace of a man who owned the world.
He walked into the light,
his coat covered in snow,
his face a map of exhaustion and rage.
He stopped ten feet away from her,
his eyes fixed on the baby.
"Is that her?"
he asked,
his voice surprisingly soft.
"Her name is Maya,"
Savannah said.
"Maya,"
he repeated,
the name sounding foreign in his mouth.
"It’s a beautiful name."
"Why are you here,
Roman?"
"You sent me the address."
"I did."
"I wanted you to see what you've lost."
Roman looked around the room,
at the wires,
the screens,
and the cold concrete.
"This is what you chose?"
"Over the house?"
"Over the life we had?"
"This is freedom,"
she said.
"That house was a graveyard,
Roman."
"And you were the undertaker."
"I gave you everything,"
he said,
taking a step forward.
"I gave you a name,
a life,
a future."
"You gave me a cage,"
she countered.
"And you gave me a reason to hate the woman I was."
"But I'm not that woman anymore."
She pointed to the screens.
"Do you see those files?"
"They're ready to go."
"In five minutes,
the world will know everything."
"The payoffs,
the trafficking,
the murders."
"You'll be lucky if you make it to the police station alive."
Roman looked at the screen,
then back at her.
"You won't do it."
"Why not?"
"Because you still love me."
Savannah laughed,
a sound that was cold and sharp.
"I loved the man I thought you were."
"That man never existed."
"I love my daughter now."
"And I love the silence of a house where you don't live."
Roman’s face contorted,
a flash of the old monster appearing in his eyes.
"If you send those files,
I'll take her."
"I'll make sure you never see her again."
"I'll use every resource I have to bury you."
"You have no resources left,"
she said,
her voice rising.
"Your associates are turning."
"Your Senator is running."
"Your mistress is talking to the feds."
"You're alone,
Roman."
"Just like you always were."
Roman lunged at her,
his hands reaching for her throat.
But Julian stepped out from the shadows,
the barrel of a gun pressed against Roman’s temple.
"Don't,"
Julian said,
his voice flat.
Roman froze,
his breath coming in ragged gasps.
He looked at Julian,
then back at Savannah.
The realization finally hit him.
It was over.
The empire was gone.
The wife was gone.
The future was a dark room with a single light.
"Do it,"
Roman whispered.
"Kill me."
"No,"
Savannah said,
reaching for the keyboard.
"That would be too easy."
"I want you to live."
"I want you to watch as they take your cars,
your houses,
and your name."
"I want you to sit in a cell and realize that the only thing you have left is the memory of the woman who destroyed you."
She hit the enter key.
The monitors flickered,
a series of progress bars appearing on the screens.
10%...
20%...
50%...
"The world is watching,
Roman,"
she said.
100%.
The room went silent.
The files were gone.
The secret was out.
In that moment,
the sirens began to wail in the distance,
the sound of a thousand endings.
Savannah looked at Roman one last time.
He looked small.
He looked broken.
He looked like a man who had finally realized that his crown was made of glass.
"Goodbye,
Roman,"
she said.
She turned and walked out of the room,
carrying Maya into the cold morning air.
Julian followed her,
his gun still trained on the man in the center of the room.
Roman didn't move.
He just stood there,
surrounded by the blue light of his own destruction.
As Savannah stepped out onto the street,
the first rays of the sun hit the snow,
making the world look new.
She didn't look back.
She had a daughter to raise.
She had a life to live.
And for the first time in her life,
the air was clear.
May you like
The winter was over.
The rebirth had begun.
