Chapter 6 - THE WEIGHT OF A DEAD MAN’S LEGACY

The morning sun rose over the cemetery with a cruel,
unforgiving brightness,
illuminating the frost that had settled over my brother’s headstone.
I sat there for hours,
the weatherproof box clutched to my chest like a holy relic,
or perhaps a cursed one.
My clothes were damp from the dew,
and my bones ached with a cold that had nothing to do with the weather.
The documents inside that box were more than just paper;
they were the blueprints of a life built on a lie.
My mother,
the woman who had raised me with stories of my father’s "heroic" struggle to build a dynasty,
had been the primary architect of this fiction.
She had curated a history of success to hide a reality of shame.
And now,
Claire had stripped it all away.
I stood up,
my legs nearly giving out from the numbness,
and stumbled back toward my car.
I had to find her.
I had to look her in the eyes and ask her why she had gone this far.
But as I reached the gate of the cemetery,
two black SUVs pulled up,
blocking my path.
Men in windbreakers with "IRS" and "FBI" emblazoned on the back stepped out.
The world seemed to slow down,
every sound magnified to a deafening roar.
"Julian Carter?"
one of them asked,
his voice flat and professional.
I couldn't speak;
I only nodded,
the box feeling heavier by the second.
"We have a warrant for your arrest regarding tax evasion,
wire fraud,
and the illegal diversion of funds related to the Hudson project."
I looked at the handcuffs,
the cold steel reflecting the morning light.
This was the next phase of Claire’s plan.
She hadn't just waited for me to find the truth;
she had timed the authorities to meet me at my lowest point.
As they pressed my head down and forced me into the back of the SUV,
I saw a silver car parked across the street.
The window rolled down just an inch.
I saw a flash of blonde hair and the unmistakable profile of my wife.
She wasn't crying.
She wasn't angry.
She was simply watching,
ensuring that the garbage was finally being taken out.
She had led me to the grave of my past,
only to bury my future right beside it.
The drive to the precinct was a blur of flashing lights and radio chatter.
I realized then that Claire didn't just want me gone;
she wanted me erased.
She wanted the world to see the "real" Julian Carter—the son of a fraud,
the husband of a mistress,
and the man who would spend the rest of his life behind bars.
I felt a hysterical laugh bubbling up in my throat.
May you like
I had spent my whole life trying to be a king,
only to realize I was just a pawn in a game I didn't even know was being played.
