Chapter 1 - THE ARCHITECT OF MY DESTRUCTION

The drive to my attorney’s office felt like a journey through a distorted reality,

where every street light was a mocking eye,

and every siren in the distance was a herald of my impending doom.

The leather steering wheel felt cold,

slick with the sweat from my palms,

as I navigated the familiar streets of Manhattan.

I pulled into the underground parking lot,

my mind racing with a thousand questions,

each one sharper and more agonizing than the last.

What could be worse than her knowing about Vanessa?

What could be more damaging than the betrayal of my marriage vows?

I stepped into the elevator,

the silence of the rising car amplifying the thumping of my heart.

The doors slid open to the plush,

overly carpeted lobby of Miller & Associates.

Marcus,

my attorney for over a decade,

was standing by the window of his corner office.

He didn't turn around when I entered.

He didn't offer his usual firm handshake or a joke about the market.

"Sit down,

Julian,"

he said,

his voice heavy with a gravity I had never heard before.

I sat,

my knees feeling like they were made of water.

"Claire's lawyers sent over a preliminary discovery packet,"

he began,

finally turning to face me.

His eyes held a mixture of pity and professional disappointment.

"I thought she just wanted a divorce,

Marcus,"

I stammered,

trying to find the mask of the confident executive I usually wore.

"She doesn't just want a divorce,"

he replied,

dropping a thick manila folder onto the mahogany desk.

The sound it made was like a gunshot.

"She has been documenting your movements for six months,

Julian.

But she didn't just stop at your hotel stays and your dinners with Vanessa.

She found the offshore entity."

The air left my lungs in a sudden,

violent rush.

The offshore entity.

The one I had used to divert funds from our joint investment firm.

The one I thought was buried under layers of shell companies and encrypted accounts.

"How?"

I whispered,

the word barely audible.

"She’s an actuary,

Julian,"

Marcus reminded me,

leaning forward.

"You forgot that she was the one who designed the original audit protocols for your firm.

She didn't just find a needle in a haystack;

she built the haystack,

and she knew exactly where you hid the needle.

She has proof of embezzlement.

She has proof of tax evasion.

And she has proof that you used those funds to buy the penthouse Vanessa is currently living in."

I felt the world tilt on its axis.

This wasn't just a custody battle anymore.

This was a criminal investigation in the making.

"She says she'll hand it all over to the DA,"

Marcus continued,

"unless you sign everything over.

The house,

the firm,

your personal holdings.

Everything."

"And Noah?"

I asked,

my voice cracking.

"She wants sole physical and legal custody,"

he said,

shaking his head.

"And based on this evidence,

Julian,

a judge will give it to her without a second thought.

You're not just a cheating husband in the eyes of the law now.

You're a white-collar criminal who abandoned his newborn son to fund a double life."

I stared at the folder,

the weight of my choices finally crushing me.

May you like

She hadn't just left.

She had dismantled my entire existence before I even knew the war had begun.
