Chapter 18 - The Counter-Conspiracy

Ardan stared at the handwritten words, her mind racing through dozens of terrifying possibilities.

She cracked the driver’s window half an inch, keeping her hand poised over the gearstick.

"What game are you playing, Cynthia?" Ardan spat, the rage cutting through her terror.

"You signed a full confession twelve hours ago."

"You gave Dorothea the keys to every offshore shell Crispen had."

"Why aren't you in federal custody?"

Cynthia leaned closer to the slit in the glass, her breath misting in the cold evening air.

"Because Dorothea Payne isn't representing you, Ardan," Cynthia whispered frantically.

"She’s representing herself."

"Do you honestly think a junior attorney from Boston could manage Eleanor Vance’s estate for thirty years without taking a slice of the pie?"

"Dorothea didn't set up those Swiss accounts for Julian Thorne."

"She set them up for Julian and herself."

"They were partners from the very beginning."

Ardan shook her head violently, rejecting the horrifying revelation.

"Dorothea protected my family since before I was born."

"Dorothea protected the revenue stream," Cynthia corrected, her voice sharp and urgent.

"Crispen wasn't trying to steal your mother's foundation to buy sports cars and penthouses, Ardan."

"He found out that Dorothea had systematically drained forty percent of the Vance trust through Julian's fake medical accounts in Zurich."

"Crispen tried to intercept the money before Dorothea transferred the final balance to Sterling."

"He got sloppy, he panicked, and Dorothea framed him before he could bring his findings to the federal prosecutor."

"Why should I believe a single word coming out of your mouth?" Ardan demanded.

"You helped him forge my signature on the trust amendments!"

"Because I was trying to stay alive!" Cynthia pleaded, tears finally breaking through her composed facade.

"Look at the court filings Dorothea gave you this morning."

"Look at the docket numbers on the emergency order of protection."

"None of them are registered in the county database."

"She didn't take me to a federal magistrate, Ardan."

"She took me to a private safe house in Brookline and told me that if I didn't hand over Crispen’s encrypted flash drive, Sterling Thorne would make me disappear just like Thomas Keller."

Ardan pulled out her phone, her hands trembling so severely she could barely unlock the screen.

She opened the scan of the protective order Dorothea had handed her that morning in the foyer.

She navigated to the Massachusetts Trial Court public portal and typed in the docket sequence: 24-CV-8891.

The screen spun for two seconds before flashing a bold, crimson notification:

"No records found for the entered docket number."

The breath left Ardan’s lungs in a sickening, hollow rush.

The emergency hearing hadn't happened.

The permanent protective order was a fabricated piece of paper, generated by Dorothea to lull Ardan into a false sense of absolute victory.

"Where is Crispen?" Ardan asked, her voice cracking.

"He isn't in county lockup, is he?"

Cynthia shook her head, her face pale under the twilight sky.

"Crispen was transferred to a private medical holding facility two hours ago on a forged psychiatric hold signed by Dorothea's pet doctor."

"They are going to declare him legally incompetent to testify."

"And once they have you out of this house, Sterling and Dorothea are going to initiate a controlled structural fire in the carriage house."

May you like

"They will burn the workshop, let the fire reach the subterranean slurry, and claim the foundation suffered an irreparable gas leak."

"The evidence of Keller's launch will be incinerated, the insurance will pay out millions to the trust, and you will be left with nothing but an empty lot and a lifetime of institutional care."
