Chapter 2 - Headlights on the Cliffside

The night shift ended at eleven, leaving my apron soaked in grease and my mind spiraling in terror.

I walked the narrow back alleys back to my rental building, clutching my keys between my knuckles.

Every footstep echoing behind me sounded like Dante Moretti’s heavy boots.

The rental was a decrepit stone box perched over the cliff edge, accessible only by a steep flight of crumbling stairs.

My roommates were already asleep, their rhythmic breathing muffled behind thin plywood doors.

I locked myself inside the tiny shared bathroom, trembling as I pulled out my phone with its shattered glass screen.

My fingers shook so badly I could barely type his name into the search bar.

Dante Moretti.

The results flooded the screen in a barrage of international headlines.

Moretti Maritime Holdings: Greek-Italian Logistics Giant Expands Fleet.

Organized Syndicate Ties: The Shadow Empire Governing Mediterranean Freight.

My knees buckled, and I sank onto the cold tiled floor beside the leaking washing machine.

Dante Moretti was not just an intimidating businessman with an armored car.

He was the feared head of a transatlantic crime syndicate controlling every port from Naples to Piraeus.

His family operated in the gray zone where high finance blurred into brutal violence.

And then I saw the article from three years ago.

Cleveland Customs Audit Uncovers Multi-Million Dollar Mediterranean Smuggling Pipeline.

Lead Investigator Thomas Hart Found Dead in Suspected Lake Erie Drowning.

My father did not drown accidentally.

The authorities back in Ohio had ruled it a suicide brought on by stress and financial misconduct.

My mother had believed them, spiraling into silence and medicated oblivion.

Suddenly, a pair of brilliant white headlights cut through the frosted bathroom window.

The glare washed over the whitewashed plaster, painting long, eerie shadows across the ceiling.

An engine purred softly in the cobblestone square below my window, a low, mechanical growl.

I scrambled up, switched off the light, and crept to the bedroom window to peer through the wooden shutters.

Parked directly beneath the ancient olive tree sat the long black Mercedes.

Dante Moretti leaned casually against the passenger door, smoking a cigarette, his face illuminated by the amber glow of the match.

He did not look around.

He looked straight up at the second-floor window where I was standing in the dark.

My phone suddenly vibrated in my palm, buzzing like an angry hornet.

Unknown Caller.

My thumb hovered over the screen, my entire body paralyzed with primal panic.

I swiped the icon and pressed the cold glass to my ear.

“Pack your father’s notebook,” Dante’s voice came through the line, calm and chillingly deliberate.

“What are you talking about?”

“How did you track me down to this apartment?”

“I warned you this afternoon that curiosity is dangerous, Emily.”

“I have monitored your passport transit since you landed in Athens four months ago.”

“Why?” I whispered, tears of terror stinging my eyelids.

“What did my father have to do with you?”

“Your father worked for my family for six years before he stole the shipping manifests that could bring our entire network down.”

“He did not commit suicide, and he did not die empty-handed.”

“He hid the encrypted customs keys with you before he went into Lake Erie.”

My heart stopped beating.

I remembered the silver antique pendant my father gave me on my twenty-first birthday, the heavy hollow locket I had promised never to take off.

“I do not know anything about shipping manifests,” I pleaded into the phone.

“The men coming up the stone stairs behind your building do not care about your innocence,” Dante said, his tone turning sharply urgent.

“Drop to the floor right now!”

The bedroom window shattered inward in an explosion of wood splinters and glass.

A heavy boot kicked the bedroom door off its hinges, and masked figures burst through the hallway, armed with silenced submachine guns.
