Chapter 11 - THE SIEGE OF THE ADIRONDACKS

We didn't sneak in through the river this time.
When the fleet of black Moretti SUVs pulled up to the edge of the pine forest surrounding the Petrov compound, the sun was just beginning to set, casting long, terrifying shadows across the Adirondack mountains.
This wasn't a rescue mission anymore. It was an assault.
Luca had assembled thirty of his most elite guards. Heavily armed, wearing full tactical armor, they stood in silence behind the vehicles, waiting for the command.
I stood beside Luca, wearing a Kevlar vest over my dark clothes, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.
Answer one: Luca wasn't trying to outsmart the Petrovs. He was using brute force to crush them, fueled by the rage of his family's betrayal.
“Marcus,” Luca said, his voice calm through the tactical headset. “Blow the gates.”
Two men sprinted forward through the tree line, planting heavy breaching charges on the reinforced steel gates of the compound. They ran back, diving behind a fallen log.
BOOM.
The explosion rattled the fillings in my teeth. The massive steel gates blew completely off their hinges, twisting into mangled scrap metal.
“Move!” Luca roared.
The Moretti tactical team swarmed through the smoke, laying down heavy, coordinated suppressive fire. The Petrov snipers in the guard towers didn't stand a chance; they were neutralized by Luca’s sharpshooters before they could even return fire.
We advanced behind the heavily armored shield-bearers, pushing relentlessly toward the main entrance of the concrete facility.
The Petrov guards, disorganized and completely unprepared for a full-scale frontal assault, fell back inside the building.
“Breach the main doors!” Luca shouted.
A second charge blew the heavy oak doors of the facility inward.
We poured into the main lobby. It was a chaotic, bloody firefight. Bullets shredded the expensive artwork and shattered the marble reception desk.
I stayed tight behind Luca, trusting him completely as he moved with terrifying, lethal precision, clearing rooms and securing the first floor.
“The sub-basement,” I yelled over the gunfire. “We have to get to the cells!”
“Covering fire!” Marcus yelled, leading a team down the main staircase to secure our flank.
Luca grabbed my hand, pulling me down a secondary stairwell that bypassed the main security checkpoint. We descended into the dark, damp corridors of the permanent holding facility.
The red emergency strobes were flashing again, casting eerie, pulsing light over the concrete walls.
We reached the heavy steel door of cell block 4B.
The electronic keypad was still glowing red, stubbornly locked.
Open two: We didn't have a Petrov guard's thumbprint to open the biometric lock. How could we get Sarah out before reinforcements arrived?
Luca didn't waste time looking for a guard. He reached into his tactical vest and pulled out a block of C4 explosive.
“Stand back,” Luca ordered, pressing the putty firmly onto the heavy steel locking mechanism. He jammed a detonator cap into the center.
He pulled me behind the thick concrete corner of the hallway and hit the detonator.
The blast was deafening in the enclosed space. A thick cloud of concrete dust and acrid smoke filled the air.
Luca immediately stepped around the corner, his rifle raised, and kicked the ruined steel door inward. It groaned and swung open on bent hinges.
I ran past him, coughing through the smoke, into the small, dark cell.
Sarah Brooks was huddled in the corner, clutching her knees to her chest, her hands covering her ears from the explosion.
“Mom!” I screamed, dropping to my knees on the cold floor.
Sarah looked up, her hazel eyes wide with sheer disbelief.
“Hannah?” she choked out, her voice raw.
“I’m here, Mom. We came back,” I sobbed, throwing my arms around her frail shoulders, pulling her tight against my chest. She smelled of dust and damp concrete, but to me, it was the greatest scent in the world.
Sarah clung to me, weeping uncontrollably into my shoulder. “You came back. You really came back.”
“We’re leaving,” Luca said gently, stepping into the cell, keeping his rifle pointed toward the hallway. “Can she walk?”
“I can walk,” Sarah said, her voice finding a sudden, fierce strength. She pulled herself up, leaning heavily on me.
We moved quickly out of the cell block and back up the stairwell.
The firefight on the main floor had mostly subsided. The Petrov guards were either dead or had surrendered, overwhelmed by the sheer force and tactical superiority of the Moretti assault team.
As we stepped out through the blown-out front doors and into the cool mountain air, a deep voice echoed from the courtyard.
“You are making a terrible mistake, Luca.”
Standing near the ruined gates, surrounded by three of his remaining loyal guards, was Nikolai Petrov.
He was bleeding from a shrapnel wound on his cheek, his tailored suit ruined, but he still held a heavy automatic rifle aimed directly at us.
“The mistake was taking her in the first place, Nikolai,” Luca said, raising his own weapon, keeping himself firmly between the Russian underboss and my mother.
“She was legally transferred to us,” Nikolai spat. “We have the deed.”
“The deed is void,” Luca said coldly. “My grandfather signed it under false pretenses. And he is currently sitting in a federal holding cell, waiting to testify against your entire syndicate.”
Nikolai’s face paled slightly. He knew that if Antonio flipped, the Feds would have enough evidence to dismantle the Petrov empire overnight.
“Then we have nothing left to lose,” Nikolai sneered, raising his rifle to fire.
Before Nikolai could pull the trigger, a single, deafening gunshot echoed from the tree line.
Nikolai dropped his rifle, clutching his shoulder as he fell to his knees in agony.
Standing at the edge of the forest, holding a smoking sniper rifle, was Marcus.
“Perimeter secured, Boss,” Marcus called out casually.
Luca lowered his weapon. He looked at Nikolai writhing on the ground.
“The Petrov syndicate is finished in America,” Luca said to the wounded Russian. “If any of your people ever come near my family again, I won't just burn your compounds. I will burn your cities.”
Luca turned around, his eyes softening instantly as they landed on me and my mother.

“Let’s go home,” Luca said quietly.
