Chapter 4 - The Legacy in the Lockbox

Marcus drove the black armored Suburban through the icy streets of the Loop in absolute silence.

I did not go to Carter Holdings.

Instead, I made Marcus pull up in front of the First Merchants Trust Bank on LaSalle Street.

"Mr. Carter expects you at headquarters, Mrs. Carter," Marcus said from the front seat, watching me in the rearview mirror.

"Tell my husband that if he wants to stop me, he can send the Chicago police to arrest me," I replied.

I climbed out of the vehicle and walked into the limestone lobby of the bank.

Ten minutes later, an elderly vault attendant led me down into the basement safety deposit vault.

My father had kept Box 412 here since the year I graduated from the University of Illinois.

I turned my key alongside the attendant’s master key, and the heavy brass drawer slid free with a metallic scrape.

Inside lay no gold, no jewelry, and no bonds.

There was only a black leather-bound ledger and an old brass key stamped with the number seventeen.

I opened the ledger under the green desk lamp of the private viewing room.

Every page was filled with my father’s meticulous, narrow handwriting.

Dates, transaction codes, and transfer routing numbers lined the margins.

On page eighty-two, a name appeared that made the room spin around me.

*Hale Shipping Logistics.*

The entries dated back twenty years, detailing systematic kickbacks paid directly to Victoria’s father, Arthur Hale.

Arthur Hale had not been an innocent bystander who died protecting Ethan during an underworld hit a decade ago.

The ledgers proved Arthur Hale had been embezzling millions from the Carter family’s maritime cargo contracts.

My father had discovered the fraud two decades ago, but Ethan’s father had ordered the books buried.

Why?

Because the Carter family had used Arthur Hale’s shipping lanes to move unregistered currency across the Canadian border.

And at the bottom of the last page, dated five days before Julian’s death, was a single handwritten note:

*Victoria is reopening the old northern routes through the theater’s basement vaults.*

*The foundation renovation is a tunnel bypass into the river transit line.*

*If Ethan signs the permits, he will be indicted by the Department of Justice before the year ends.*

My father had not died over an old family grudge.

He had died because he was trying to save Ethan from an internal corporate trap orchestrated by Victoria Hale.

My phone vibrated inside my coat pocket.

It was an unknown number, but I swiped the screen and brought the device to my ear.

"Claire," Ethan’s voice cut through the line, tight with an anxiety I had never heard in him before.

"Where are you right now?"

"I am holding my father’s ledger, Ethan."

The silence on the other end was heavy, suffocating, and absolute.

"Do not leave the bank," he commanded.

"Marcus says two unmarked surveillance sedans just parked across the street from the LaSalle entrance."

May you like

"Those aren't my men, Claire."

"They belong to Victoria's backers in the eastern syndicate."
