Chapter 7 - The Web of Financial Deceit

Ten miles away, the morning light poured into the quiet library of Marcus Hayes’s downtown law office.

I sat in a wide leather armchair, sipping warm herbal tea while resting my swollen feet on a plush velvet ottoman.

Beside me sat Evelyn Reed, a senior forensic certified public accountant whose firm specialized in uncovering concealed assets.

Marcus Hayes was pacing slowly in front of a whiteboard covered in flowcharts, bank routing numbers, and corporate entities.

My mother sat quietly in the corner, her knitting needles clicking in a steady, comforting rhythm.

Inside my belly, my daughter rolled gently, her movements stronger and more defined with every passing day.

"Tessa, what we found goes far deeper than a fraudulent refinancing package," Evelyn Reed began, opening a thick spiral-bound report.

Evelyn slid the document across the table, pointing to a series of wire transfers highlighted in red ink.

"For the past twenty-four months, Gavin has been systematically siphoning liquidity from your joint marital checking and savings accounts."

"How much did he take, Evelyn?" I asked, my voice calm despite the cold ache settling into my chest.

"Over one hundred and forty thousand dollars," Evelyn replied without hesitation.

"He disguised the transfers as automated contributions to diversified retirement funds and tax reserves."

"In reality, the money was being routed through three intermediary accounts before landing in a personal brokerage account registered under his name alone."

I stared at the numbers on the page, remembering every time Gavin had scolded me for buying higher-grade paint for the nursery.

I remembered him telling me that we needed to live frugally because market volatility was threatening our future security.

While I was carefully budgeting for organic baby formula and crib sheets, my husband was stealing thousands of dollars a month from our shared life.

"And where did that money go after the brokerage account?" I asked, looking up at Marcus.

Marcus walked over to the whiteboard, tapping his dry-erase marker against a box labeled Elegance by Cole LLC.

"He used sixty-five thousand dollars of that stolen cash to artificially prop up Maren’s event planning company," Marcus explained.

"Maren’s business has been operating at a massive net loss for nearly two years."

"She was drowning in commercial credit card debt, facing personal bankruptcy, and about to lose her luxury downtown apartment."

The pieces of the puzzle began clicking together with horrifying clarity in my mind.

Maren had not simply fallen in love with Gavin; she had sold her soul to him out of pure financial desperation.

"Gavin became her financial savior," Marcus continued, his eyes sharp behind his spectacles.

"He bailed out her payroll, paid off her collection agencies, and promised her complete financial liberation."

"In exchange, he convinced her to incorporate Harborstone Holdings LLC under her sole name."

"He manipulated her desperation, making her believe that acquiring your grandfather's house was their golden ticket to wealth."

"Did Maren know the full extent of the scheme, Marcus?" my mother asked from the corner, lowering her knitting.

"Maren knew she was taking Tessa's house," Marcus answered bluntly.

"She knew the equity loan was going to be deposited into an account she personally controlled."

"What Maren did not understand—because Gavin was careful not to explain it—was the criminal exposure."

"Gavin intentionally kept his own signature off every single filing related to Harborstone Holdings."

"He set up the corporate governance structure so that Maren would be legally liable for filing false loan applications and deceptive conveyances."

"If the scheme had worked, Gavin would have used his leverage over Maren to take the cash and the house."

"If the scheme collapsed, Gavin planned to claim he was simply an innocent accountant who was misled by a greedy, manipulative mistress."

A bitter chill ran down my spine as I listened to the depth of Gavin’s calculated psychopathy.

He had not only planned to destroy his pregnant wife, but he had also prepared a trap to sacrifice the woman carrying his second child.

"What is our legal position now, Evelyn?" I asked, taking a deep breath to steady my nerves.

"Our position is impregnable, Tessa," Evelyn said with absolute professional certainty.

"Because of the emergency lis pendens Marcus filed, the title to your grandfather's home remains completely unclouded."

"The four hundred and fifty thousand dollar loan application was officially canceled by the lender at eight o'clock this morning."

"Furthermore, we have petitioned the family court for an immediate clawback of the one hundred and forty thousand dollars stolen from joint accounts."

"Because those transfers constitute a fraudulent dissipation of marital assets, the court will award you dollar-for-dollar restitution from Gavin’s separate property."

"What about Gavin's firm?" I inquired, thinking about his arrogant posture from the night before.

Marcus smiled a grim, razor-thin smile.

"Vance, Sterling & Keller terminated his partnership an hour ago," Marcus reported.

"The State Board of Accountancy has suspended his professional license pending an ethics trial."

"And the state attorney general's office has assigned two criminal prosecutors to examine his communications."

I looked down at the financial report, running my fingers over the cold black print detailing the death of my marriage.

For months, I had lived in an illusion, thinking I was building a family with a loyal, hardworking partner.

In reality, I had been sleeping beside a financial predator who viewed his wife and unborn daughter as obstacles to be liquidated.

"I want everything finalized before the baby arrives, Marcus," I said firmly.

"I do not want my daughter to spend a single second of her life under the shadow of his name."

May you like

"We will make sure of it, Tessa," Marcus promised, his voice solid and resolute.

"The walls are closing in on him from every direction, and there is nowhere left for him to run."
