Chương 9 - The Reckoning

The ballroom dissolved into complete pandemonium as the handcuffs clicked around Marcus's wrists.
Flashbulbs from press photographers outside the glass doors began popping violently.
Richard Kensington looked like he was having a stroke, shouting useless threats at his attorneys over the phone.
Jason Vance, who had been lurking near the bar hoping to network with the senior partners, tried to sneak toward the kitchen exit.
Two uniformed officers stepped squarely into his path.
"Mr. Vance?" one officer asked.
"The District Attorney's office would like a word regarding forged signatures on corporate filings."
Jason collapsed against the wall, covering his face with his hands as the reality of his destroyed career crushed down upon him.
In the center of the ballroom floor, Olivia stood entirely alone.
The emerald dress she had bragged about looked like a costume now.
The high-society friends who had surrounded her ten minutes earlier had all stepped back, forming a ring of judgment around her.
She looked at me, tears of humiliated rage spilling down her painted cheeks.
"You ruined everything, Emily," she spat, her voice shaking with venom.
"You were nobody."
"You were just the pathetic girl we kept around so we’d look better by comparison!"
The cruelty in her words didn't hurt me anymore.
It felt pathetic.
I stepped away from Daniel's side and walked toward her, stopping three feet away.
"I didn't ruin your life, Olivia," I said, my voice steady, clear, and perfectly audible to every socialite watching.
"You built your life on arrogance and cruelty, and you thought there would never be a cost."
"Tonight, the bill came due."
"And you cannot afford it."
Olivia looked around desperately for anyone to support her, but every gaze was turned away in shame or cold disdain.
She turned and fled the ballroom in tears, her heels clicking frantically against the marble floor.
Daniel walked up behind me, placing a steadying hand at the small of my back.
"Are you all right?" he asked softly.
I looked up at him, feeling the immense weight of the past six months lift from my shoulders.
"For the first time in years," I replied, "I am completely fine."
Across town at Mass General, my mother’s surgery was declared an absolute success an hour later.
The dark clouds that had hung over my family for decades had finally been dispersed.
Not through a miracle, but through the deliberate, unyielding protection of a man everyone else feared.
As we walked out of the gala, the autumn air felt crisp and clean.
The press tried to swarm us, but Daniel’s security detail formed an impenetrable wall, ushering us into the warmth of the waiting car.
Inside the quiet vehicle, the city lights reflected off the tinted glass like diamonds.
"Where are we going?" I asked, leaning back against the leather seat.
"Wherever you want, Emily," Daniel said, turning his gray eyes toward me, stripped of all armor, revealing only the man beneath the legend.
May you like
"The world is finally yours again."
