Chapter 7 - The Traitor's Footprint

By midnight, the crosstown bus had deposited us near the transit hub of Union Station.
Madison navigated us to a cheap, cash-only hourly motel tucked between rusted railway viaducts and shipping warehouses.
The room smelled of stale tobacco and industrial bleach, but it had no registry requirements and no surveillance cameras.
I stood beneath the scalding water of the cramped shower for twenty minutes, washing away the mud, the cold rain, and the phantom scent of Vincent's cologne.
When I stepped out, wrapped in an oversized cotton shirt Madison had bought from a nearby all-night pharmacy, Madison was hunched over her laptop on the laminate desk.
The glow of the screen cast sharp blue shadows across her furrowed brow.
"Claire, look at this," Madison said, tapping the trackpad without looking up.
I walked over and leaned against the back of the peeling desk chair.
On the screen was an encrypted database file from the Illinois Port Authority, cross-referenced with bank transfers flagged by federal regulators.
"What am I looking at?" I asked, squinting at the dense columns of numbers.
"This is the offshore company Vincent set up three months ago—the one Sophia Reynolds was brought in to manage," Madison explained, pointing to a recurring line item.
"Vincent believed this subsidiary was shielding his shipping containers from federal scrutiny. But look at the destination routing numbers."
The funds were not flowing into dummy trusts in the Caymans or Switzerland.
Every single transaction terminated at an account registered to a holding corporation in Newark, New Jersey.
"The Valenti family," I said, cold dread pooling in my stomach.
"Exactly," Madison confirmed, bringing up an aerial photograph of an inlet near Lake Michigan.
"Sophia isn't just funneling money out of the Moretti accounts. She's been altering the manifests for the southern dry docks. Next Tuesday, the Valenti syndicate is planning a hostile takeover of Vincent’s primary weapon and narcotics transit corridor. They're going to ambush his convoys using the exact patrol schedules Sophia has access to."
I stared at the screen, my mind racing through the past five years of Vincent's rise.
He had fought three bloody territorial wars to secure those docks.
Hundreds of lives, including the lives of loyal lieutenants who had protected me during my early marriage, hung in the balance.
"Vincent thinks he's using her to appease the political faction," I whispered, disbelief lacing my words.
"He thinks he is the master manipulator in that restaurant, dangling diamond bracelets to keep an ambitious socialite compliant. Meanwhile, she's paving his funeral route."
"And there's something else," Madison added, her voice dropping into a somber, hesitant tone.
She opened an encrypted audio file downloaded from an anonymous tip line server.
"What is that?"
"My source at the district attorney’s office intercepted a wiretap call from Sophia's private burner phone two nights ago. Listen to this."
Madison pressed play.
The sound of light static hissed from the laptop speakers, followed by Sophia’s unmistakable, honeyed voice.
"Everything is on schedule. He's completely distracted. I have him convinced that his wife is simply being emotional, and he spent the entire morning dealing with my faux emergency at Northwestern."
A deep, gravelly male voice answered—Dominic Valenti himself.
"And the wife? Does she know anything about the manifests?"
"Nothing," Sophia laughed softly, a sound that chilled me to the marrow.
"She's just a sheltered housewife with an art degree. But she saw us at the restaurant, and she showed up at the clinic today holding a pregnancy test result. That could be a problem if Vincent tries to reconcile with her."
"Handle it, Sophia. If the don gets soft because of an heir, our window closes. Make sure she disappears before Tuesday, or put her in a box."
"Don't worry," Sophia murmured smoothly.
"I already tipped off the transit patrol about her friend's car. Once Vincent's men round her up, I'll ensure the stress terminates any claim she has on this family."
The recording ended with a sharp click.
My fingernails dug into the palms of my hands until the skin broke.
Sophia hadn't just seduced my husband with cheap adoration; she was actively orchestrating the annihilation of the Moretti organization while plotting to destroy my child.
And Vincent, arrogant and blind in his ivory tower, had handed her the knife.
"What do we do?" Madison asked, looking up at me with real fear in her eyes.
"If Vincent finds you, Sophia’s people inside his security detail could arrange an 'accident' before you ever speak to him alone."
May you like
"Vincent made his choice when he turned his back on me in that clinic hallway," I said, my voice steadying with iron resolve.
"I'm not going back to save him. But I am not going to let Sophia Reynolds bury me in the dark either."
