Chapter 16 - THE BOUNDARY OF NO RETURN

Watching Ethan’s car disappear around the corner of the village square didn't trigger a single pang of regret or sorrow in my heart.

Instead,

I felt an extraordinary lightness,

as if the last lingering tether binding me to my old life had been cleanly severed.

Aunt Clare squeezed my hand gently,

her eyes warm with quiet pride.

“You handled that with remarkable grace,

my dear,

” Clare said as we resumed our walk toward the clinic.

“Grace isn't about being weak,

Clare,

” I replied,

adjusting my cardigan against the crisp breeze.

“It’s about knowing your own value so completely that you never have to raise your voice to prove it.

” We collected my prenatal records from Dr.

Henderson’s Concord associate,

a kind physician named Dr.

Vance who specialized in holistic maternal care.

He checked my vitals,

smiled reassuringly at the steady heartbeat of our unborn son echoing through the Doppler monitor,

and confirmed that everything was progressing with textbook perfection.

“You’re strong,

healthy,

and entirely ready for this transition,

Norah,

” Dr.

Vance said,

handing me my updated chart.

“Just keep resting and avoiding unnecessary stress.

” When we returned to the cottage,

Lily was waiting on the porch with a batch of freshly baked pumpkin bread,

the sweet aroma wafting across the yard.

“Did you see him?” Lily asked cautiously as I climbed the wooden steps.

“Yes,

” I smiled,

sitting down in the rocking chair and accepting a warm slice of bread.

“We talked.

He’s starting to understand what accountability means,

Lily.

” “Will you ever let him back into our lives?” she asked,

her young eyes searching mine with a hint of vulnerability.

“As a co-parent for our son,

yes,

when he proves he’s stable,

” I replied honestly.

“As my husband? Never.

Some doors,

once closed,

are meant to stay shut so healthier ones can open.

” Lily nodded,

a serene smile spreading across her face as she looked out over the sparkling lake.

We had both survived the storm,

and the horizon ahead was entirely ours to shape.
