Chapter 12 - MADISON’S DEPARTURE

With his professional reputation teetering on the brink of collapse and his financial accounts frozen pending audit reviews,

Ethan returned to his empty Brookline home on Monday evening.

He expected silence,

but as he unlocked the front door,

he heard the distinct clatter of heels on hardwood.

He stepped into the foyer to find Madison standing by the front closet,

zipping up a designer leather weekender bag.

“Madison? What are you doing?” he asked,

stunned.

She turned around,

her expression cold and transactional,

completely devoid of any lingering affection.

“I’m leaving,

Ethan,

” she said flatly,

tossing her long hair over her shoulder.

“I heard about the firm’s municipal audit penalties and your father’s medical drama.

Frankly,

this isn't the lifestyle I signed up for.

I date successful architects who take me to Nantucket for the weekend,

not bankrupt men drowning in domestic scandals and corporate lawsuits.

” Ethan stared at her,

a strange,

hollow laugh escaping his throat.

“You said you loved me,

” he whispered,

the absurdity of it all washing over him.

“Ethan,

please,

” Madison scoffed,

rolling her eyes as she slung her bag over her shoulder.

“We adults don't use that word in casual arrangements.

You were fun when your life was running smoothly on autopilot.

Now that the wheels have fallen off,

you’re just dead weight.

Goodbye,

Ethan.

” The heavy front door clicked shut behind her,

sealing her departure with the same cold indifference with which she had entered his life.

Ethan stood alone in the cavernous hallway,

surrounded by the echoes of his own catastrophic choices.

For the first time in his life,

there was no invisible caretaker to clean up the mess,

no devoted wife to absorb the blow,

and no adoring mistress to distract him from his failures.

He sank slowly to the floor of the foyer,

burying his face in his hands as he finally wept—not for Madison,

May you like

not for his lost partnership,

but for the devastating realization of what he had thrown away.
