Chapter 14 - The Matriarch's Shadow

Dawn broke over the Bremerton shipyard in shades of bruised purple and slate gray.
Leo was sleeping peacefully on the gurney, his vitals stabilized by Gertrude’s intravenous infusion.
I had not slept a single second.
Every maternal instinct inside me had hardened into a sharp, lethal blade.
I was no longer just a mother surviving a toxic marriage.
I was a protector standing between an industrial empire and the boy who grew beneath my ribs.
A sharp knock echoed from the heavy metal door at the top of the stairwell.
Gertrude reached beneath the diagnostic counter, pulling out a heavy snub-nosed revolver and holding it flat against her thigh.
"Vance is supposed to be alone," Gertrude murmured, motioning me behind the partition.
The metal door creaked open, followed by the measured click of leather boots descending the concrete steps.
Detective Vance walked into the light, her face drawn with exhaustion.
Behind her walked a woman I recognized instantly from the financial columns of the *Wall Street Journal*.
Victoria Holloway.
Tristan’s older sister, the Chief Operating Officer of *Aethelgard Life Sciences*.
She wore a tailored cashmere trench coat, her raven hair slicked back with razor-sharp precision, her face a cold mask of aristocratic arrogance.
"Drop your weapon, Matron," Victoria said calmly, glancing at Gertrude’s revolver with utter disinterest.
"I am not here with private security."
"I came alone with Detective Vance because I prefer to handle family insolence directly."
I stepped out from behind the partition, my hands clenched into white-knuckled fists.
"Get out of here before I tear your throat open," I snarled.
Victoria didn't flinch.
She looked past me to the gurney where Leo lay sleeping, her dark eyes narrowing with chilling calculation.
"He looks remarkably stable for a child whose bone marrow is undergoing cellular restructuring," Victoria remarked, adjusting her leather gloves.
"You monsters did this to him," I stepped forward, Vance placing a warning hand on my shoulder to hold me back. "Tristan poisoned his own son for your company."
"Tristan was an incompetent fool who almost ruined twenty years of research because of his childish greed and his cheap internet mistress," Victoria said dismissively.
"He was tasked with managing the controlled micro-dosing protocol."
"Instead, he panicked when your legal team started auditing his hidden shell companies, and he overdosed both of you to cover his tracks."
"He was always weak."
"That is why he is currently rotting in a federal isolation cell, where he belongs."
"And you think Julian is any better?" I spat. "He sent lawyers to steal my child!"
"My father does not care about you, Reese," Victoria said, her tone devoid of emotion.
"He does not care about your petty divorce, or the three million dollars you took from Tristan’s accounts."
"He cares about the biological asset sleeping on that table."
She pulled a slim gold case from her coat, extracted an embossed business card, and laid it on the counter.
"Here is the reality of your situation, Reese."
"Julian has filed a sealed national security patent claim over the genetic sequencing inside Leo’s marrow."
"Under the Federal Defense Production Act, *Aethelgard* has the legal authority to claim exclusive custody of any biological sample vital to proprietary medical infrastructure."
"By tomorrow afternoon, federal marshals will arrive with an executive extraction order."
"You will be institutionalized as a compromised guardian."
"And Leo will spend the rest of his childhood inside our private research facility in Greenwich."
My vision burned red.
I grabbed a stainless-steel scalpel from the tray beside me and lunged across the counter, stopping the blade an inch from Victoria’s jugular.
"I will slit your throat right here, Victoria."
"I will burn your family's empire to the ground before you ever touch a single hair on his head."
Victoria didn't even blink.
"You can kill me, Reese," she whispered coldly.
"It will not stop the order."
"My father does not stop."

"He built the modern world on patents like this."
"And he will bury you under one."
