Chapter 19 - The Arrest and the Reckoning

The boardroom erupted into chaos.

Two board members stood up so quickly their leather chairs tumbled backward onto the carpet.

"Finch, what the hell is she talking about?" one of the senior directors yelled, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table.

Finch lunged toward the table to grab the charts, but the two sheriff’s deputies moved faster.

"Dr. Marcus Finch?" the lead officer said, stepping between Finch and the evidence.

"Step away from the table and put your hands behind your back."

"Do you know who I am?" Finch roared, struggling as the cold steel handcuffs snapped around his wrists.

"I built this hospital’s endowment! Whitaker knew! Whitaker signed the off-book authorizations!"

Arthur Whitaker slowly buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with silent, crushing shame.

"Arthur..." I said, walking toward him as the deputies hauled a screaming Finch out through the glass doors.

"Tell me you didn't know he was cutting people open in Gary."

Arthur looked up, tears streaming down the deep creases of his weathered face.

"I swear on my daughter’s life, Emma... I didn't know," he sobbed.

"I signed the foundation transfers because Finch told me it was a bridge loan to keep our trauma center from going bankrupt."

"I was cowardly, Emma."

"I let him handle the finances because I didn't want to admit that the hospital was failing."

"And Daniel was his creature."

"Daniel was never the mastermind," I whispered, the final veil of illusion falling away.

"He was just the scalpel Finch used to bleed us dry."

Arthur stood up, unpinning the gold Chairman’s badge from his lapel.

He laid it gently on the table in front of me.

"I’m resigning, Emma," he said, his voice stripped of all authority and pride.

"The hospital needs someone whose hands aren't stained with compromise."

"The board will offer you the interim presidency."

May you like

"Don't do it for me."

"Do it for your mother."
