Chapter 9 - The Desperate Ambush

Twenty-four hours later, the crisp autumn air outside Dr. Rachel Evans' specialized reconstructive clinic was peaceful as I pulled into the designated patient parking area.

I had spent the night in the warm, quiet guest suite of Brandon and Rachel’s family estate, falling asleep to the soothing sounds of Leo, Maya, and Noah sleeping soundly in the nursery adjacent to my room.

For the first time in over a year, my sleep had not been punctuated by anxiety terrors or the constant anticipation of cruel remarks.

Martha Cole had prepared a nourishing breakfast of poached eggs, fresh berries, and herbal tea, insisting that my only responsibility for the next forty-eight hours was preparing my mind and body for the upcoming surgical reconstruction.

I stepped out of my car, holding my small leather shoulder bag containing my surgical consent paperwork and pre-operative blood work clearances.

As I turned toward the clinic’s frosted glass entrance, the sudden screech of burning rubber shattered the midday quiet of the medical pavilion.

A dark metallic SUV rounded the corner at high speed, jerking violently into the adjacent empty parking space with such recklessness that its front tire jumped the concrete curb.

The driver’s side door flew open, and Scott Miller tumbled out onto the asphalt.

He looked completely unhinged.

His designer button-down shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, stained with dark coffee spots, and untucked over wrinkled slacks.

His hair was wildly disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, framed by dark purple shadows of acute sleeplessness, and his jaw covered in three days of patchy, graying stubble.

"Clara!" he yelled, his voice echoing off the brick exterior of the medical complex as two elderly patients walking near the entrance recoiled in alarm.

"Stop right there!

Do not walk through those doors!"

I backed up against the side of my car, my pulse leaping into my throat, my fingers instantly reaching into my jacket pocket to press the emergency speed-dial on my phone.

"Stay away from me, Scott," I said firmly, keeping my voice loud, distinct, and audible to the clinic receptionists who were already looking through the large front windows.

"You are violating the temporary restraining order Diane Vance filed in county court this morning."

"To hell with your damn restraining order!" Scott roared, lunging forward until he was standing barely four feet away from me, the heavy stench of stale bourbon and cheap cigarettes wafting off his clothes.

"Do you have any idea what you did to me this morning?

Apex Global suspended me pending a full internal forensic audit!

Security escorted me out of my own corner office with my personal belongings in a cardboard box while my entire regional team watched!

Vanessa Reed resigned thirty minutes later and is currently talking to corporate legal to cut an immunity deal for herself!

You destroyed my life in less than twelve hours, Clara!

All because of a stupid, harmless joke about some damn diapers!"

"You destroyed your own life the day you decided to steal from our children and treat your marriage like a public comedy routine, Scott," I replied, standing as tall as my aching frame would allow, refusing to bow my head or cower before his towering rage.

"You chose to embezzle corporate funds.

You chose to commit adultery.

You chose to stand in our living room and mock the physical damage I suffered carrying your children.

You did this to yourself, and now you have to face the consequences like an adult."

Scott’s eyes turned wild, his hands clenching into trembling fists as he took another aggressive step forward.

"You think you’re so righteous because you found a few receipts?" he spat, flecks of saliva flying from his lips.

"You think Brandon and his fancy doctor sister actually care about you?

They’re laughing at you behind your back, Clara!

Brandon just wants to be the white knight saving the pathetic, broken mother of three!

You are an invalid!

Without my salary and my insurance, you will be begging for government assistance within six months!

You come home with me right now, withdraw those files from Apex, or I swear to God you will never see Leo, Maya, and Noah again!"

He reached out with a sudden, vicious swipe, his fingers clawing toward the strap of my shoulder bag to drag me toward his SUV.

Before his hand could make contact with the leather, a massive arm wrapped around Scott’s right shoulder, twisting his upper body with fluid, irresistible mechanical leverage that threw him off balance.

Brandon Cole had stepped out from the clinic’s side entrance, dressed in his navy county paramedic uniform, his expression carved out of granite.

With a single, controlled hip toss developed from years of handling combative trauma patients, Brandon forced Scott against the hood of the SUV, pinning his right wrist behind his shoulder blade with clinical efficiency.

Scott let out a muffled shriek of pain as his cheek was pressed against the hot metal hood.

"What did I tell you Sunday night, Scott?" Brandon whispered into his ear, his voice deadly quiet, completely devoid of adrenaline or panic.

"I told you that if you approached Clara or raised your voice to her again, you would be dealing with law enforcement.

You are trespassing on private medical property, you are in violation of a filed civil protective order, and you just attempted a physical assault on camera."

Brandon gestured with his chin toward the two uniformed campus police officers who were already sprinting across the parking lot with their batons drawn.

"Let go of me, Brandon!" Scott choked out, struggling uselessly against Brandon’s grip.

"I’m an executive!

She’s my wife!

This is a domestic misunderstanding!"

The two campus officers reached the SUV, immediately taking control of Scott’s arms, pulling him upright, and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with a series of sharp, mechanical clicks.

"Scott Miller, you are under arrest for domestic menacing, violation of a temporary protection order, and disorderly conduct," the senior officer announced, reading his Miranda rights off a laminated card while pushing him toward the patrol cruiser.

Scott turned his head frantically as he was being forced into the back seat, his arrogant facade completely gone, replaced by the pathetic, sniveling terror of a cornered coward.

"Clara, please!" he sobbed, tears cutting lines through the dirt on his cheeks.

"Tell them to stop!

Call my mother!

Tell them it was just an argument!

Please don't let them take me to jail!"

I didn't answer.

I stood beside Brandon, smoothing the lapels of my coat, watching in silence as the patrol cruiser’s heavy rear door slammed shut.

The siren gave a single, brief wail as the cruiser pulled away, leaving the parking lot in pristine, uninterrupted quiet.

Brandon turned toward me, his dark eyes filled with steady, reassuring warmth as he gently placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Are you all right, Clara?" he asked softly.

May you like

"I am better than all right, Brandon," I said, drawing the clean, crisp autumn air deep into my lungs.

"I am finally ready for my surgery."
