Chapter 10 - The Reckoning of the Board

Seventy-two hours after Scott’s arrest in the clinic parking lot, the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Apex Global Logistics headquarters was draped in tense, suffocating silence.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the city skyline stretched toward the horizon under a cold November drizzle.

Inside, the ten members of the senior executive committee, accompanied by outside forensic auditors and corporate legal counsel, sat around a fifty-foot polished mahogany table.

At the center of the projection screens at both ends of the room, a devastating PowerPoint presentation displayed high-resolution scans of Scott Miller’s corporate credit card transactions, forged hotel vouchers, and falsified client entertainment filings.

Vanessa Reed sat at the far corner of the table, flanked by her private employment attorney, her face pale, her hands trembling as she wiped away silent tears of humiliation.

She had spent the preceding forty-eight hours delivering hundreds of text messages, WhatsApp logs, and private email chains directly to the corporate compliance team in exchange for a non-prosecution agreement.

The records revealed that Scott had systematically coerced her participation, promising rapid departmental promotions, inflated performance bonuses, and private bonuses drawn from manipulated regional transportation accounts.

When the heavy frosted double doors opened, Scott was escorted into the room by two private building security guards.

He was free on a twenty-five-thousand-dollar cash bond posted by Evelyn Miller, but the toll of his disgrace was written across every line of his gaunt, hollow face.

He wore a cheap off-the-rack dark suit that hung loosely on his shrinking frame, his head bowed, his hands clasped nervously in front of him as he took the solitary wooden chair placed at the foot of the massive conference table.

The Chief Executive Officer, Arthur Vance—a silver-haired veteran of the logistics industry and, coincidentally, the second cousin of my attorney Diane Vance—did not invite Scott to sit comfortably.

Arthur adjusted his spectacles, looking down at Scott with the profound disgust of an honorable man surveying an absolute disgrace.

"In my thirty-four years leading this corporation, Scott, I have rarely witnessed such an appalling breach of fiduciary trust, personal ethics, and basic human decency," Arthur Vance began, his voice echoing with absolute authority.

"You were entrusted with an annual regional operating budget of twelve million dollars and an executive compensation package that placed you in the top two percent of earners in this state.

Yet our external forensic team has confirmed that over the past fifteen months, you systematically embezzled two hundred and fourteen thousand dollars in corporate capital through fraudulent travel reimbursements, fictitious vendor invoicing, and unauthorized hospitality disbursements."

Scott swallowed hard, his throat dry, his lips trembling as he attempted to mount a desperate defense.

"Arthur... Mr. Vance... please let me explain," Scott stammered, his voice thin and pathetic.

"I was under immense personal stress.

My wife gave birth to triplets... she suffered severe medical complications that completely upended our domestic life.

She became emotionally distant, physically disabled, and the financial pressures of three infants drove me into temporary lapses of judgment.

I was trying to keep our family afloat while managing regional supply chain disruptions!

I intend to pay back every single cent through a loan against my home equity!"

Arthur Vance slammed his open palm onto the mahogany table with a sound like a thunderclap that made every person in the room flinch.

"Do not dare use your wife's physical sacrifice as a shield for your moral bankruptcy, Scott!" Arthur thundered, his eyes flashing with righteous fury.

"We have reviewed the medical timelines provided by your wife's legal counsel.

While she was home nursing three infants with torn pelvic ligaments and nerve entrapment, you were using company funds to purchase five-star luxury suites in the Smoky Mountains for romantic rendezvous!

While she was skipping reconstructive physical therapy sessions because you lied to her that your family was broke, you were transferring company funds to offshore sports gambling registries in Curacao!

You are not a stressed father who made a mistake; you are a narcissistic predator who robbed his own children to finance a pathetic fantasy of bachelorhood!"

Arthur slid a thick black leather binder across the table toward Scott.

"Your employment with Apex Global Logistics is terminated immediately for cause under section fourteen of our executive governance code," Arthur stated with cold finality.

"Your stock options, deferred executive compensation, and retention bonuses are hereby revoked and forfeited to offset the corporate restitution balance.

Furthermore, our general counsel has delivered a complete criminal referral package to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio and the Internal Revenue Service for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and tax evasion.

You have thirty minutes to collect whatever personal items remain in your locker under armed security escort before you are permanently barred from this property."

Scott stared at the black binder, his hands shaking so violently that he could not even lift the cover.

The world he had spent fifteen years constructing—the illusion of wealth, prestige, authority, and country-club invulnerability—had collapsed into total ruin in less than four days.

He looked toward Vanessa Reed, begging silently with his eyes for a single glance of solidarity, but she turned her face toward the window, completely refusing to acknowledge his existence.

He was escorted out of the boardroom in complete, suffocating disgrace, his footsteps fading down the long carpeted hallway toward the service elevator.

Two miles away, in the private surgical recovery wing of the university medical center, the afternoon sun was pouring warmly through the large windows of my private room.

The robotic reconstructive surgery had been a complete, textbook success.

Dr. Rachel Evans had spent three meticulous hours repairing the torn ligaments, reconstructing the anatomical support of my bladder, and releasing the trapped nerve bundles.

I lay in the comfortable bed, wearing a clean, soft cotton gown, feeling a faint, dull surgical soreness that was completely different from the agonizing, hopeless chronic pain I had carried for fourteen months.

Brandon walked into the room carrying a large vase filled with fresh sunflowers and white hydrangeas, placing them gently on the windowsill beside my bed.

A moment later, Martha Cole pushed the wide double stroller into the room, Leo, Maya, and Noah cooing happily as they looked around with bright, curious eyes.

I reached out with both hands, lifting Maya gently onto my chest, feeling her tiny warmth against my heart.

For the first time since my children were born, my body felt whole, my spirit felt unconquerable, and the future belonged entirely to us.
