Chapter 6 - The Shattered Facade

Daniel’s jaw dropped, his eyes darting frantically around the foyer as if searching for an escape route from the truth.

He raised his hands defensively, shaking his head with an expression of performative innocence.

He stammered that the trip was strictly professional, that Celeste was merely an associate, and that the photo was taken out of context.

He claimed that the social media post was an inside marketing joke designed to generate buzz for their new resort project.

I stood up from the bottom stair, feeling the lingering ache in my body transform into pure, unyielding resolve.

I held my phone toward him, zooming in on the photograph of his wedding ring pressed against Celeste’s silk shawl.

“Did you tell your marketing team to take my wallet, Daniel?” I asked, my voice slicing through his stammering lies.

“Did you tell them to leave me stranded without a car while our three-day-old son spiked a fever of one hundred and four?”

Daniel stepped forward, reaching out to touch my arm, attempting to deploy the same charismatic charm that had once enslaved me.

“Grace, you’re hysterical,” he pleaded, his voice dropping into a patronizing, soothing cadence.

“I was securing our future. We’ll go to the hospital right now, together. I’ll fix everything with the doctors.”

Before he could bridge the distance between us, the front door opened again, and Marcus Vance stepped into the house.

Behind the prominent attorney stood two uniformed police officers, their hands resting neutrally near their tactical belts.

Daniel spun around, his chest heaving, his face contorting into an ugly mask of outrage.

“What is the meaning of this?” Daniel shouted, pointing a trembling finger at the officers. “This is my private residence!”

Marcus Vance stepped forward, handing a crisp white legal document directly to my husband’s chest.

“Mr. Vance, you are being served with an emergency temporary restraining order and an immediate petition for sole custody,” Marcus stated calmly.

“Furthermore, you are being cited for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and child endangerment pending grand jury review.”

Daniel stared at the papers in disbelief, his eyes darting between the attorney and the officers.

“Child endangerment? Are you insane? I was on a business trip! Grace, tell them to stop this right now!”

I walked past him toward the door, never breaking my stride, never turning back to look at his desperate face.

“You took the car, you took my money, and you ignored nineteen emergency calls while Noah was dying,” I said over my shoulder.

“You are not a father, Daniel. You are an abandonment waiting for a legal consequence.”

As the officers instructed Daniel to gather his personal belongings and vacate the premises, his phone rang loudly from his pocket.

The ringtone was customized for Celeste Morgan, screaming into the tense room like a funeral bell for his old life.

He looked down at the vibrating screen, his eyes wide with horror, as his carefully constructed kingdom collapsed around him.
