Chapter 8 - THE MORNING AFTER

The sun was fully up by the time Emily finally left Sophie’s room.

The little girl was sleeping peacefully, exhausted from the terror of the night before.

Emily quietly closed the bedroom door.

She was exhausted to her bones.

Her shift had technically ended twelve hours ago.

She walked down the grand staircase, intending to go to the staff quarters, pack a small bag, and finally go home to sleep.

But as she reached the foyer, she found Luca standing by the front doors.

He was wearing fresh clothes—a dark sweater and slacks—but he looked just as tired as she felt.

“Leaving?” he asked.

Emily nodded.

“My mother is probably worried. I usually call her in the mornings.”

Luca stepped forward.

“I already called her.”

Emily blinked in surprise.

“You did?”

“I told her there was a security issue at the estate and that you were safe. I also arranged for a private nurse to stay with her for the next month, fully paid.”

Emily stared at him, completely overwhelmed.

“Luca... you didn't have to do that. I can barely afford—”

“You aren't paying for it, Emily.”

He walked closer to her.

“And you aren't going to the staff quarters.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy silver key.

He held it out to her.

“This is the key to the guest house behind the rose garden. It’s fully furnished. It has a kitchen, two bedrooms, and it’s secure.”

Emily looked at the key, but she didn't take it.

“I don't understand. I’m a housekeeper.”

“No,” Luca said softly. “You were a housekeeper. Today, you are fired from that position.”

Emily’s stomach dropped.

“Fired?”

“I cannot employ the woman who saved my daughter’s life to wash my floors.”

He took her hand and gently pressed the key into her palm.

“I want you to move into the guest house. Bring your mother. The estate doctors will handle her treatments here. You will oversee Sophie’s care and education. A full salary, benefits, and whatever else you need.”

Tears sprang to Emily’s eyes.

It was everything she had ever prayed for.

Financial security. Medical care for her mother. A safe place to live.

“Why are you doing this?” she whispered.

Luca looked down at her.

The harshness of the mafia boss was completely gone, replaced by a profound, unguarded sincerity.

“Because this house has been filled with liars and ghosts for two years,” he said. “And you are the only real thing that has walked through those doors.”

He reached up and gently touched the small bandage on her cheek where the glass had cut her.

His fingers were warm, and his touch sent a shockwave straight to her heart.

“You protected my family, Emily. Now, let me protect yours.”

Emily looked up into his dark eyes.

She saw the pain of his past, but she also saw a fierce, unyielding loyalty.

“Okay,” she whispered.

Luca smiled.

It was a small smile, but it changed his entire face, making him look years younger.

“Good.”

He stepped back, clearing his throat slightly.

“Get some sleep. We will move your mother this afternoon.”

The next few weeks passed in a blur of transition.

Emily moved into the beautiful guest house.

Her mother, frail but recovering, was overjoyed by the fresh air, the beautiful gardens, and the impeccable medical care provided by Luca’s private doctors.

Sophie was thrilled to have Emily living so close.

The nightmare of Caroline faded quickly for the little girl, replaced by afternoon tea parties in the garden and bedtime stories.

But the biggest change was Luca.

He began spending less time in his dark study and more time in the sunlit areas of the house.

He ate breakfast with Sophie and Emily every morning.

He came home early to help Sophie with her reading.

And in the evenings, after Sophie went to sleep, he would often walk down to the guest house.

He didn't come to talk about the mafia.

He came to talk to Emily.

They would sit on the porch, drinking wine, talking about their childhoods, their dreams, and the heavy burdens they both carried.

One warm evening in late May, they were sitting on the porch steps.

The estate was quiet, the air smelling of blooming jasmine.

Luca was looking out at the gardens.

“I’m stepping down from the Commission,” he said suddenly.

Emily turned to him in shock.

“Stepping down? Can you do that?”

“Marco will take over the day-to-day operations. I will handle the legitimate businesses. Real estate. Shipping.”

He looked at her.

“Caroline almost took my daughter because of the life I lead. I won't let that happen again.”

Emily smiled softly.

“Sophie will be so happy to have her father home more.”

Luca didn't look away from Emily.

“It isn't just for Sophie.”

The air between them suddenly felt very thick.

Luca reached out and took Emily’s hand.

His thumb traced the knuckles, sending a warm shiver up her arm.

“I told you once that I was a ghost,” he said softly. “I thought my life ended when Isabella died. I thought my only purpose was to keep Sophie safe.”

He leaned closer.

“But you brought the light back into this house, Emily. You brought it back to me.”
