Chapter 12 - THE FAMILY WE CHOOSE

Two years later.

The estate was loud, chaotic, and completely full of life.

It was Sophie’s ninth birthday.

The garden was filled with children running through sprinklers, eating Thomas’s famous pizza, and laughing in the summer sun.

Emily sat on a blanket under a large oak tree.

She wasn't wearing a housekeeper’s uniform, or a wedding dress.

She wore a comfortable sundress, and resting on her lap was a sleeping, three-month-old baby boy.

Leo Moretti.

Luca walked over, carrying two glasses of lemonade.

He sat down beside her, handing her a glass and gently kissing the top of his infant son’s head.

“He sleeps through anything,” Luca smiled, watching the chaos of the party.

“He gets that from you,” Emily teased.

Sophie ran over, completely out of breath, her face painted like a tiger.

“Daddy! Emily! Thomas says it’s time for cake!”

“We’re coming, Principessa,” Luca laughed, standing up and offering Emily his hand.

Emily carefully stood, cradling baby Leo.

They walked over to the patio, where a massive chocolate cake was waiting.

The crowd sang Happy Birthday, and Sophie blew out all nine candles with a giant wish.

As the guests ate cake, Sophie ran into the house.

She returned a few minutes later, holding a blue envelope.

With a little yellow flower in the corner.

She walked over to Luca and Emily.

“It’s time to read it,” Sophie said proudly.

Luca smiled softly, taking the envelope and helping her open it.

They sat together on the patio sofa, Emily leaning against Luca’s shoulder, holding Leo, while Sophie sat on Luca’s other side.

Sophie unfolded the letter and began to read aloud.

“My darling Sophie. Happy ninth birthday.

By now, you are growing so fast. You are smart, and brave, and kind.

I hope you are taking care of your father. And I hope your family is full of love.”

Sophie stopped reading for a moment.

She looked at her father, who was smiling at her with tears in his eyes.

She looked at her baby brother, sleeping peacefully in Emily’s arms.

And she looked at Emily, the woman who had fought for her in the dark, and loved her in the light.

Sophie looked back at the letter and read the final line.

“Remember, my sweet girl. The past is only a story we carry. The future is the family we choose to build.”

Sophie carefully folded the letter and put it back in the envelope.

She hugged Luca, and then she hugged Emily, burying her face in Emily’s neck.

“I love you, Mom,” Sophie whispered.

It was the first time she had ever used the word.

Emily’s heart swelled until she thought it might burst.

She kissed the little girl’s cheek, tears of absolute joy spilling over.

“I love you too, my sweet girl. So much.”

Luca wrapped his arms around all of them.

The mafia boss who had lived in the shadows was gone forever.

In his place was a father, a husband, and a man who had finally found his peace.

The letters had guided them through the darkness.

But the light they found together was entirely their own.
