Chapter 11 - The Locker At The Station

Union Station was a cavernous, echoing cathedral of marble and steel.

The morning rush hour was in full swing, businessmen and tourists rushing past us in a blur of motion.

But Luca and I walked straight past the ticketing counters, heading deep into the older, subterranean levels of the station.

“Locker 414,” Luca muttered, scanning the rusted numbers on the wall of the old baggage holding area.

“These lockers haven’t been used in decades. The city is supposed to demolish this wing next month.”

“That’s why the ticket was dated for today,” I realized, my voice echoing in the damp corridor. “My father knew the exact deadline. If we didn’t come today, whatever is inside would be destroyed.”

We found row 400.

The lockers were covered in thick layers of dust and graffiti.

412.

413.

414.

We stopped.

Locker 414 had a heavy, antique brass padlock securing it.

I looked at the train ticket in my hand.

I ran my thumb over the punched holes.

They weren’t just random dates.

“The holes,” I said, showing the ticket to Luca. “They form a shape.”

Luca traced the perforations.

“It’s a key pattern.”

He took the ticket, folded it tightly along the punched lines, forming a rigid, jagged edge of thick cardboard.

He inserted the folded paper into the wide slot of the antique padlock.

He turned it.

Click.

The heavy brass lock popped open.

I stopped breathing.

Luca pulled the lock off and opened the rusted metal door.

Inside the dark locker was a single, velvet jewelry box.

And a handwritten letter.

I reached in with trembling hands and pulled them out.

I opened the letter first.

My dearest Emma,

If you are reading this, you survived. And if you brought the Moretti boy like I asked, then Michael’s plan worked.

Tears immediately blurred my vision.

I didn’t die in a car crash, Emma. I knew the Bellinis were going to kill Vincent for loving your mother. I couldn’t save Vincent, but I could save you.

I staged the crash. I took the heat, so Michael could slip you to Clara in the chaos.

I spent the rest of my life watching you from the shadows. Watching Clara raise you with so much love.

I sobbed, covering my mouth.

My father hadn’t abandoned us. He had sacrificed his entire identity to become our invisible shield.

Open the box, Emma.

I set the letter down and picked up the velvet box.

I popped the lid.

Inside, resting on black satin, was a breathtaking, diamond-encrusted family heirloom.

A necklace.

But it wasn’t a Bellini heirloom.

It was a Moretti crest.

Luca gasped, stepping back.

“That’s… that’s my grandmother’s necklace. It was stolen fifty years ago.”

I looked back at the letter.

The Bellinis didn’t just hurt your family, Emma. They stole the Moretti legacy to build their empire.

I stole it back.

The necklace belongs to the Moretti family. But the diamonds inside it… they belong to you.

I looked up at Luca.

“He didn’t just save me,” I whispered.

“He secured both of our futures.”

Suddenly, a heavy set of footsteps echoed at the end of the corridor.

We turned.

Standing in the shadows was a tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark overcoat.

His face was obscured by the dim light, but the gun in his hand caught the gleam of the fluorescent bulbs.

“Hand over the box, Emma,” the man said.

His voice sent a cold shockwave down my spine.

It was a voice I hadn’t heard in years.

It was my mother’s doctor from the nursing home.
