Chapter 37 - The Black Broadcast

The radio whistled with feedback, followed by the cold, mechanical hum of an automated relay station.
*EMERGENCY BROADCAST SYSTEM OVERRIDE. CODE DESIGNATION: ARCHANGEL-OMEGA. STANDBY FOR TRANSMISSION.*
Grandpa hadn't just built a vault; he had built an automated distribution hub. The moment the primary vault below was breached and destroyed, the system defaulted to the secondary transmission relay housed right here in the attic crawlspace of the farmhouse.
I ran up the narrow stairs to the attic.
Tucked beneath the rafters, surrounded by decades of drying herbs and antique furniture, sat an old military-grade kilowatt transmitter. Its vacuum tubes were already glowing an angry, warm orange, humming like an angry hornet’s nest.
On the center console sat a high-speed data interface matching the proprietary drive Arthur had shoved into my hands.
Below, through the attic window, I saw the headlights.
Four black, unmarked SUVs were tearing up the mud driveway, their high-intensity searchlights sweeping across the facade of the house. Behind them, through the rain, I could see the silhouette of a heavy tactical transport van.
Sterling’s surface perimeter team had realized the vault was destroyed, and they were closing the loop.
I slammed the armored drive into the transmitter's interface port.
The green monitor on the radio deck flashed to life instantly:
`ARCHANGEL MASTER ARCHIVE READY.`
`DESTINATION: ASSOCIATED PRESS / REUTERS / INTERPOL / PENTAGON WATCH NETWORK.`
`TOTAL DATA VOLUME: 1.4 TERABYTES.`
`BROADCAST COMMENCING... 1%... 4%... 9%...`
The transmitter hummed louder, the heavy vacuum tubes radiating blistering heat into the attic air. Outside, the searchlights converged on the front porch. The front door was kicked off its hinges with a splintering crash that echoed up the stairwell.
"Sweep the ground floor!" a harsh, tactical voice barked from below. "Find the boy! He has the hash drive!"
Heavy, combat-booted footsteps pounded across the hardwood boards of the study, moving toward the stairs.
I drew the .45, backed into the shadows behind a stack of oak floorboards, and watched the upload counter slowly creep forward.
`64%... 71%... 83%...`
The attic door creaked open.
A tactical operative in full black ceramic armor, night-vision goggles flipped up over his helmet, stepped slowly onto the floorboards, his rifle sweeping the room.
"Clear," he began into his throat-mic.
I stepped out from behind the timber and fired twice.
The heavy .45 slugs hit his chest plate, the kinetic energy slamming him backward down the steep stairs with a sickening crash of breaking bones and clattering gear.

"He's upstairs!" shouted a voice from the bottom of the landing. "Flashbangs! Move, move!"
