Chapter 3 - Echoes of a False Grave

The rain showed no sign of stopping as Sheriff Miller led my damaged car off the main road and onto an overgrown dirt trail.

We pulled behind a dilapidated, rusted hunting cabin hidden deep within the dense pine forests of Blackwood County.

"My father built this place forty years ago," Miller said as he opened the cabin door and clicked on a battery-powered lantern.

"No county maps show this trail, and nobody from the station knows it exists.

I carefully carried the heavy transport incubator inside, setting it down gently on a sturdy oak table.

The machine let out a faint, rhythmic beep, indicating the internal temperature was remaining stable at ninety-eight degrees.

Miller dragged a wooden chair across the floorboards and sat directly beside the glowing crib, his eyes never leaving the baby.

"Show me the proof, Maya," he demanded, his voice hollow and cracked with grief.

"Show me why I shouldn't throw you in a holding cell this very second.

I unzipped my water-resistant medical bag and pulled out a thick manila folder wrapped inside two layers of plastic.

I placed the documents on the dusty table between us and opened the seal.

"These are the surgical logs from Blackwood Medical Center dated yesterday afternoon," I explained, pointing to the signatures.

"Conrad Vance scheduled an emergency cesarean section in the basement operating suite, far away from the maternity ward.

"He brought in an outside surgical team under non-disclosure agreements, but he needed a neonatal specialist to stabilize the newborn.

"My agency dispatched me because I was on the emergency on-call roster for rural medical facilities.

Miller pulled the papers closer, his reading glasses trembling in his hands as he read the names.

"Patient Name: Julianne Miller-Vance," he read aloud, his breath catching in his throat like a jagged piece of glass.

"No...

no, that can't be true.

"I buried my daughter four months ago in the family plot behind St.

Luke’s Church.

"I stood beside that closed casket in the pouring rain, just like tonight, and I wept until I had no tears left.

"You buried an empty box, Sheriff," I told him, looking into his tormented eyes.

"Conrad Vance faked her death using a forged coroner’s report signed by Dr.

Harlan, his business partner.

"He needed Julianne legally declared dead so he could gain total control over the Miller family trust and the timberland estates.

"Julianne inherited sixty percent of the county’s commercial land from her mother's side of the family.

"As long as she lived and remained married to him, the trust strictly forbade him from selling the mineral and timber rights.

"Her will clearly stated that if she died without a surviving heir, the entire estate defaulted to Vance's personal foundation.

Miller gripped the edges of the wooden table so hard that the old timber groaned under his immense strength.

"And the baby?" Miller asked, his knuckles turning white as rage began to replace his sorrow.

"Julianne was six months pregnant when he staged the disappearance and the fake death," I replied.

"He kept her heavily sedated in the subterranean wing of his private clinic, waiting for the child to reach viable gestation.

"His plan was to eliminate Julianne permanently after the birth and secretly place the infant in a private adoption network overseas.

"That way, no biological heir could ever contest his ownership of the land.

Miller buried his face in his rough hands, his shoulders heaving with silent, agonizing sobs.

"I trusted him," the Sheriff whispered into the dark cabin.

"When Julianne rebelled against me and married him, I thought she was just being reckless.

"When he came to my door four months ago crying tears of fake grief, I hugged that monster and apologized for ever doubting him.

Suddenly, the baby inside the incubator whimpered, her tiny arms reaching into the warm air.

Miller lifted his head, his eyes burning with a terrifying, righteous fury.

"Where is my daughter, Maya?" he asked, standing up straight.

"Is Julianne still alive tonight?
