Chapter 10 - The Judgment at Chambers Street

The marble rotunda of 31 Chambers Street echoed with the footsteps of attorneys, clerks, and armed court officers.

Sarah walked through the metal detectors with her head held high, Isabella’s small hand gripped firmly in her left fingers.

Dante walked half a pace behind them, his dark coat buttoned tight to conceal both his sidearm and the blood seeping through his bandages.

Security guards checked Sarah’s original New York State Medical Board identification card, their eyes widening in sudden recognition of the name that had made headlines four years prior.

"Dr.

Vance?" the sergeant at the magnetometer asked in disbelief.

"We were told you were deceased in Pennsylvania."

"Reports of my death were administrative errors by corrupt municipal coroners, Sergeant," Sarah said clearly, her voice projecting across the crowded marble lobby.

"I am here for the emergency probate hearing in Courtroom 304."

They entered Courtroom 304 just as Judge Harold Davies was raising his gavel to finalize the emergency proceeding.

Julian Moretti sat at the petitioner’s table in an immaculate navy suit, his face covered in fresh medical butterfly bandages where Dante had slammed him into the wine racks.

Beside him sat three high-priced corporate attorneys with leather briefcases open on the mahogany table.

"The court finds that in the absence of the natural father and any surviving legal guardians," Judge Davies intoned, looking down from the bench, "custody of the minor child Isabella Moretti shall be granted temporarily to—"

"Objection, Your Honor!" Sarah’s voice rang through the vaulted chamber like a whip crack.

The heavy oak doors swung wide, every head in the gallery turning in stunned disbelief as Sarah led Isabella down the center aisle toward the bar.

Julian jumped to his feet, his chair screeching against the parquet floor, his face draining of all color.

"What is the meaning of this interruption?" Judge Davies barked, slamming his gavel down with irritated force.

"My name is Dr.

Elena Vance," Sarah announced, stepping directly to the respondent's podium and laying her original credentials upon the wood.

"I am the named testamentary guardian under the irrevocable trust established by Edward Vance and Carmela Moretti."

"And I am presenting the child, alive, unharmed, and under my direct legal protection."

Julian’s lead attorney attempted to intervene, his voice rising in panic.

"Your Honor, this woman is an imposter using the name of a missing person!"

"She is an accessory to the kidnapping of this child from the Moretti estate last night!"

"Is that so?" Dante’s deep voice resonated from the back of the courtroom, freezing the entire room in absolute terror.

Dante walked down the aisle, his presence commanding the space with such sheer, lethal authority that even the court officers backed away from the partition.

He reached the podium, stood beside Sarah, and pulled a certified diplomatic courier envelope from his coat pocket.

"This envelope contains the forensic financial audit of the Cayman accounts held in the name of Harold Davies," Dante said, his voice quiet, cold, and devastatingly clear.

"It also contains the video surveillance footage of Julian Moretti purchasing three military-grade demolition charges from an unlicensed arms dealer in Newark forty-eight hours ago."

"Charges that were detonated at three o’clock this morning in an attempt to murder my daughter and me."

Julian reached instinctively inside his jacket for his weapon, losing all composure as his carefully constructed legal coup disintegrated before his eyes.

"Get down!" Dante shouted, shoving Sarah and Isabella beneath the heavy oak table just as Julian drew his silver pistol.

Court officers screamed, drew their service weapons, and fired three synchronized rounds into Julian’s chest before he could clear his holster.

Julian crashed against the jury box, his pistol clattering across the floor, his eyes rolling back as his life bled out onto the state crest of New York.

Judge Davies sat frozen behind the bench, his gavel slipping from his limp fingers onto the legal pads below.

Sirens wailed in the streets outside as federal marshals and tactical response units converged on Foley Square.

Beneath the heavy oak counsel table, Sarah held Isabella tightly against her chest, her arms shielding the trembling child from the violence.

Dante dropped to his knees beside them on the floor, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps as the blood finally soaked entirely through his black sweater.

He looked at Sarah, reaching out a trembling hand to touch the dime-sized scar on her forearm one last time.

"You kept her safe," Dante whispered, his amber eyes dimming as the massive blood loss finally overcame his iron will.

"Dante! Stay with me!" Sarah commanded, pressing her fingers against his carotid artery as the sirens grew deafening outside the courthouse doors.

"Someone call a trauma bus!" she screamed into the chaotic courtroom, her medical authority rising above the screams and smoke.

"I need a thoracotomy tray and three units of O-negative right now!"

She wasn't running anymore; she was standing her ground in the light of day, fighting for the family that fate had carved into her flesh.
