Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Chose June

Jonah wouldn't open the hatch. He led us through a service tunnel instead.
"Marcus helped fake my death," he admitted as we ran. "He buried a coffin full of medical waste and drove you and Evelyn out through the cemetery gate."
"So he saved me?"
"And took Victoria's money to keep quiet. Both can be true."
Behind a steel door we found June, the woman from the tank, sitting on a hospital bed. She looked about sixty and wore a patient's bracelet around a wrist marked with needle scars.
"I heard you arguing," she said. "Good. Dead people don't argue."
I knelt beside her. "My name is Clara."
June studied my face and smiled sadly. "Elena used to sing when the lights went out. Your face always made her cry."
"You've met my mother?"
"Through the vent. Before they moved her. She told us her daughters were still alive. That's how I learned I wasn't the original."
0C sat on the other side of the bed. "Are you angry?"
"At my makers? Yes. At you? Never."
June handed me a yellowed card she'd hidden inside a pillow seam. It listed real names beside specimen numbers, plus the patients who had bought tissue from them. At the bottom was a hospital seal from a private clinic outside town.
"Victoria sells treatments," June said. "When they fail, she takes her patients' records and turns them into threats. Some people will pay anything to bury a bad test result."
Jonah stared at the list. "This is the proof I've been looking for."
"No," June said. "This is one page. The master ledger is in the flood-control room."
A distant blast rocked the hall. Water began to seep beneath the door.

From an overhead speaker, Victoria's voice purred, "The entire medical wing is about to be washed clean."
June gripped my hand. "If she floods us, she'll send the chemicals straight into Alder Creek."
