Chapter 3 - The Girl in the Camera

My father shoved me behind a control desk before the lower door opened.

A woman stepped out barefoot in a hospital gown. She had my face, but her eyes tracked the room like someone studying a map for the first time.

"Are you Clara?" she asked.

I stood up. "Yes."

"So am I," she said. "They tell me I was made to replace you."

Jonah shut off the intercom. "Don't get close. She has a tracking implant and we don't know what they taught her."

The girl heard him anyway. "They taught me thirty-seven ways to say good morning. They didn't teach me what happens when someone doesn't want me."

I recognized that feeling too well.

Her wristband read 0C. Beneath it was a date from last month.

"How old are you?" I asked.

"I have been awake for forty-three days. My body is twenty-two years old. Please don't ask me to explain the difference."

The wall screen cut to a camera outside. Victoria dragged Evelyn past the oak with a pistol pressed to her back. Marcus followed, bleeding through his sleeve.

"Evelyn!" I reached for the microphone.

My father stopped me. "Victoria is listening."

On the screen, Evelyn looked straight into the lens.

"Clara, I should have told you. I gave them your blood. Every year."

My throat tightened. The school nurse, the annual appointments, the harmless extra vials—every ordinary memory changed shape.

"Why?" I whispered.

Evelyn lifted her chin. "Because they told me your mother would die without it."

Victoria smiled toward the camera. "There. No more secrets. Come upstairs, Clara, and I'll let Evelyn keep breathing."

The image switched. A live scan showed a woman in a sealed room beyond the laboratory. She had Elena's face, older now, with a tube helping her breathe.

Under her photograph was a label: PRIMARY HOST.
