Chapter 10 - THE KEY TO THE PAST

My mother wept when I showed her the silver bracelet.
She wept harder when I told her the ledger was burned, and that the apartment building was now hers.
We sat at our small kitchen table until the sun came up, drinking tea while she finally told me the truth about the man she had loved, and the sacrifice she had made to protect him.
At ten o'clock sharp, a sleek black SUV pulled up to the curb.
It wasn't Frank driving, but another trusted guard.
I was wearing my best dress—a simple navy wrap dress—and a borrowed coat from my mother.
The drive downtown felt entirely different this time.
I wasn't a girl desperate for a paycheck anymore.
I was walking into a new world.
The bank was a massive, imposing stone building in the financial district.
Nico was waiting for me in the private lobby.
He wore a dark charcoal suit, looking completely refreshed despite the chaos of the night before.
When he saw me, his eyes warmed, and he offered his arm.
I took it, feeling the solid muscle beneath the expensive wool.
“Ready?” he asked.
“No,” I admitted with a nervous smile.
He chuckled, a rich, genuine sound.
“Me neither.”
We were escorted by the bank manager down to the subterranean vault.
The air was cool and smelled of old metal and money.
The manager directed us to Box 842 and respectfully left us alone.
Nico looked at me.
“You do it.”
I held up the small silver key.
My hand was shaking slightly as I slid it into the lock.
I turned it.
Click.
Nico pulled the long metal box out and set it on the viewing table.
We both took a breath, and he lifted the lid.
Inside, resting on red velvet, were three items.
The first was a thick stack of bearer bonds. Millions of dollars, completely untraceable.
The second was a letter, sealed in a heavy envelope, addressed to Nico.
And the third was a small, black velvet ring box.
Nico ignored the money.
He picked up the letter and broke the seal.
I watched his face as he read his father’s handwriting.
For the first time since I had met him, Nico’s eyes filled with tears.
He lowered the letter, staring at the wall of the vault.
“What does it say?” I asked softly.
Nico swallowed hard.
“He wrote that the money is for Julian, to ensure he is always taken care of. But the rest of it...”
He looked at me.
“He wrote about your mother.”
My breath caught.
“He said he loved her, Tessa. He said letting her go was the greatest regret of his life, but he knew he couldn't protect her from the life he lived. He said he hoped, one day, I would be smarter than him.”
Nico set the letter down.
He reached into the box and picked up the small black velvet ring box.
He didn't open it immediately.
He held it in his palm, looking deeply into my eyes.
“I spent my entire life trying to be the man my father wanted me to be,” Nico said quietly. “Cold. Ruthless. untouchable. I got engaged to Laurel because it made business sense.”
He took a step closer to me.
“But last night, when I saw you standing between Marcus and Mia... when I saw you hand over that ledger to protect me... I realized my father was right. Business is meaningless without loyalty. Without love.”
He opened the small box.
Inside was the most breathtaking ring I had ever seen.
It wasn't a gaudy, modern diamond like Laurel’s.
It was an antique sapphire, surrounded by small, delicate diamonds, set in platinum.
“This was my mother’s ring,” Nico said. “My father never gave it to another woman. He left it here for me.”
I covered my mouth, tears spilling over my cheeks.
“Nico...”
“I know it’s too soon,” Nico said, his voice rough with emotion. “I know you need time. I’m not asking you to marry me today, Tessa.”
He gently took my left hand and placed the open box in my palm.
“I’m asking you to let me earn the right to ask you.”
I looked at the sapphire.
Then I looked up at the man who had terrified me, protected me, and finally, seen me.
I smiled through my tears.
“You don't have to earn it, Nico,” I whispered.
I took the ring out of the box and handed it to him.
May you like
“Put it on.”
