Chapter 11 - THE NEW BEGINNING

Nico’s hands, which had steadily held a gun and brutally fought off armed men the night before, trembled as he slid the antique sapphire onto my finger.

It fit perfectly.

He didn't step back.

He pulled me in, wrapping his arms around my waist, and kissed me.

It wasn't a gentle, polite kiss.

It was deep, possessive, and filled with the promise of a future I never thought I’d have.

When we finally broke apart, the air in the vault felt entirely different.

The ghosts of the past were settled.

We walked out of the bank hand-in-hand, stepping into the bright Boston sunlight.

The weeks that followed were a whirlwind of change.

Nico kept his promise.

He began the long, difficult process of dismantling the illegal sides of the Ferraro empire, shifting their massive wealth entirely into legitimate real estate and shipping.

It wasn't easy, and it wasn't without risk, but he refused to let Mia grow up in a world where men with guns broke into her home.

Frank recovered fully from his surgery.

Nico forced him into retirement, but bought him a beautiful house on Cape Cod, complete with a garage for a restored classic car.

My mother moved into the penthouse of the apartment building she now owned. She smiled more in those first few weeks than she had in twenty years.

And I moved into the Ferraro estate.

Not into the small maid’s quarters in the back hall.

I moved into the master suite, as the future Mrs. Ferraro.

One afternoon in late November, the first snow of the year began to fall over the estate.

I was sitting in the library, a cup of hot tea in my hands, watching the snowflakes drift past the large windows.

Mia was sitting on the rug near the fire, happily drawing in a coloring book.

The house was peaceful.

Safe.

The library doors opened, and Nico walked in.

He had just returned from a long board meeting, shedding his suit jacket and loosening his tie.

He looked exhausted, but the moment he saw us, his entire demeanor changed.

He walked over and kissed the top of Mia’s head, making her giggle.

Then he came to the sofa, sitting heavily beside me and pulling me against his side.

He let out a long, contented sigh, pressing a kiss to my temple.

“Long day?” I asked, leaning my head on his shoulder.

“The longest,” he murmured. “But it’s over. The final shipping contracts are signed. We’re completely legitimate, Tessa.”

I smiled, turning my face to kiss his jaw.

“I’m so proud of you.”

He looked down at me, his dark eyes filled with absolute adoration.

“I did it for you. For us.”

He reached out and gently rubbed his thumb over the sapphire ring on my finger.

“I want to get married in the spring,” he said softly. “In the garden. Just family and close friends. No business partners. No politicians.”

“Just us,” I agreed.

Mia looked up from her coloring book.

“Can I be the flower girl, Tessa?”

I smiled at her, my heart swelling with love for the little girl who had become like a daughter to me.

“Only if you promise to hold Uncle Nico’s hand if he gets nervous,” I teased.

Mia giggled.

“He won't get nervous. He’s brave.”

Nico looked at me, his gaze dropping to my lips.

“I’m terrified,” he whispered playfully.

Then he kissed me, slow and sweet, while the fire crackled and the snow fell outside.

I closed my eyes, letting the warmth of his love wash over me.

I had walked into this house a desperate maid, trying to survive in a world I didn't understand.

I had faced down lies, guns, and the shadows of my mother’s past.

But in the end, I hadn't just survived.

May you like

I had found my family.
