Chapter 6 - THE BROKEN HEIRESS

"Isabella, put it down."

Gabriel’s voice was as cold as the concrete beneath our feet.

Isabella’s hands shook violently. Blood from her injured hand stained the grip of the heavy silver revolver. She had it leveled at the center of six-year-old Elijah’s chest.

The little boy whimpered, burying his face in Leo’s lap.

Leo threw his arms over his son, using his own weakened body as a shield. "Don't hurt him," Leo begged, his voice raspy. "Please."

I stood frozen next to my mother. We were too far away to stop her.

Anthony and his men had their weapons raised, but no one dared fire. A twitch of Isabella’s finger would be fatal.

"Don't take a step, Gabriel," Isabella cried, her perfectly styled hair now a tangled mess across her tear-streaked face. "If I go to prison, my life is over. The Varela family will disown me. I'll have nothing!"

"You already have nothing," Gabriel said slowly, taking half a step toward her. "You betrayed me. You betrayed my family."

"I did it for us!" she screamed. "Marcus was going to kill you! I found out he orchestrated the crash. I found out he kept Leo alive to torture your father. I was trying to buy Leo's freedom so I could bring him back to you!"

Reversal.

Gabriel stopped.

The entire warehouse went dead silent, save for the rain pounding on the metal roof.

"What?" Gabriel whispered.

"I wasn't trying to steal your money, Gabriel," Isabella sobbed, her chest heaving. "I found your mother's letter. I investigated. When I realized Marcus had Leo, I panicked. I knew if I told you, you would go to war with Marcus, and he would kill you. So I tried to pay him off quietly from my own trust fund. I was trying to save your brother."

I looked at Isabella. Her mascara ran down her cheeks in thick black lines. She looked broken. Terrified.

"Then why force my father to sign the papers?" Gabriel asked, his voice wavering.

"Because Marcus demanded more money," she choked out. "More than I had. He said if Vincent didn't sign over Leo's share of the empire, he would put a bullet in Leo's head. I was just trying to buy time."

She lowered the gun a fraction of an inch.

"I love you, Gabriel. I was just trying to fix it."

Gabriel stared at her. The anger in his eyes slowly shifted to a profound, tragic pity.

"Isabella," Gabriel said softly. "You should have trusted me."

He held out his hand.

"Give me the gun."

Isabella looked at his outstretched hand. She looked at Elijah, trembling in his father's arms.

She let out a broken, agonizing sob.

She dropped the gun.

It clattered harmlessly against the concrete.

Anthony immediately stepped forward, kicking the weapon away and grabbing Isabella's arms. She didn't resist. She just collapsed against him, weeping.

"Take her to the estate," Gabriel told Anthony quietly. "Put her in a guest room. Make sure she's treated for her hand. We'll deal with the authorities later."

Anthony nodded. "And Marcus?"

Gabriel looked down at his uncle, who was pinned to the floor, glaring up with pure hatred.

"Lock him in the basement cell," Gabriel said, his voice hardening into ice. "He doesn't get a guest room."

As Marcus was dragged away, cursing and screaming, the warehouse finally felt safe.

Gabriel turned to his father.

Vincent was kneeling beside Leo's wheelchair. The elderly man was gently touching Leo's face, tracing the lines of his jaw, tears streaming down both their faces.

"My boy," Vincent whispered, his voice clearer than it had been in months. "My beautiful boy."

Leo rested his head against his father's hand. "I missed you, Dad. Every single day."

Gabriel walked over slowly. He knelt beside his father.

For a moment, the two brothers just looked at each other. Eighteen years of stolen time hung between them.

Gabriel reached out and grasped Leo’s hand.

"I'm going to get you the best doctors in the world, Leo," Gabriel promised, his voice thick with emotion. "You're coming home."

Elijah peeked out from under his father's arm.

Gabriel smiled gently at the boy. "And you, too, little man. I'm your Uncle Gabriel."

Elijah looked at my mother.

My mother smiled and nodded. "It's okay, Eli. They're family."

Elijah slowly reached out and gave Gabriel a hesitant high-five. Gabriel laughed, wiping a tear from his eye.

I watched them, feeling a warm ache in my chest. It was a beautiful moment.

But then, I felt a gentle tug on my sleeve.

I turned.

Mr. Vincent was standing beside me. He looked exhausted, leaning heavily on his cane, but his eyes were sharp.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, rectangular object wrapped in velvet.

He pressed it into my hand.

"What is this?" I asked softly.

"A thank you," Vincent whispered. "For not looking away when the soup spilled."

I carefully unwrapped the velvet.

Inside was a small, ornate golden key.

I frowned. "A key? To what?"

Gabriel walked over, seeing the key in my hand. His breath caught.

"That's the key to my mother's private study," Gabriel said, staring at his father. "The room hasn't been opened since she died."

Vincent nodded slowly. He looked at my mother, Sarah.

"Eleanor left something else," Vincent said, his voice trembling. "Something only Sarah knows about."

My mother sighed, wrapping her coat tighter around herself.

"It's true," my mother said softly. "The ledger proved Marcus was stealing. But there was another secret Eleanor uncovered before she died. A secret about the night Gabriel and Leo were born."

My mother looked directly at Gabriel. "Gabriel, Eleanor Romano wasn't your biological mother."
