Chapter 14 - The Confrontation

The exposure of Dante sent shockwaves through the entire Rossi syndicate.
Instead of executing him in cold blood,
Dominic decided to use the traitor to deliver a fatal psychological blow to Vince.
"We're going to feed Vince fake intelligence through Dante's terminal,
" Dominic explained to me in the privacy of his study.
"We'll tell him I'm suffering from severe blood poisoning and that my guards are lowering their defenses tomorrow night.
"
"And when Vince takes the bait and attacks personally?" I asked,
crossing my arms.
"We trap him inside the courtyard and finish this war once and for all,
" Dominic replied,
his eyes gleaming with lethal resolve.
Over the next twenty-four hours,
the tension in the mansion reached a boiling point.
I spent my time double-checking medical supplies and setting up an emergency trauma station in the lower library.
Dominic insisted on helping me arrange the surgical trays,
his right shoulder finally moving with much less stiffness.
"You have blood on your cuff,
nurse,
" he noted,
reaching out to gently brush a speck of dust from my sleeve.
His fingers lingered against my wrist for a fraction of a second longer than necessary.
"That's from sterilizing equipment,
Mr.
Rossi,
" I replied,
my voice dropping an octave as I looked up into his gaze.
"Call me Dominic when we're alone,
" he whispered softly,
his face inches from mine.
"We're not alone,
Dante is tied up in the cellar,
" I teased gently,
stepping back with a faint smile.
Dominic chuckled,
a rich,
genuine sound that seemed completely out of place in a mafia fortress.
"Dante is the least of our worries tonight,
" he said,
his expression turning serious again.
"Tomorrow,
Vince comes for my throne.
"
May you like
"And we'll be waiting for him,
" I said firmly.
