Chapter 7 - The Iron Fortress

By midnight,

the estate was transformed into a fortress of steel and silent aggression.

Heavy iron gates were locked,

armed guards in dark suits patrolled the manicured lawns with guard dogs,

and security cameras tracked every falling leaf in the rain.

Inside the grand estate,

Ruby paced back and forth across the polished floor of the primary guest suite,

her burgundy housekeeping uniform replaced by a simple dark sweater and trousers.

She felt trapped,

restless,

and furious.

She was not a helpless pawn in a mob war,

nor was she a fragile flower that needed to be locked in a glass box.

She walked over to the heavy oak door and jiggled the brass handle.

It was unlocked.

Dominic hadn't locked the door;

he had simply given Marcus orders to keep her inside.

Ruby smirked softly to herself.

Dominic Vale underestimated her resilience.

She opened the door quietly,

stepping out into the dimly lit hallway of the east wing.

The house was dead silent again,

the kind of silence that pressed heavily against your eardrums like deep water.

She walked silently down the carpeted corridor,

following the faint yellow glow spilling from the half-open door of Dominic's private war room.

Inside,

Dominic sat at a massive glass table,

surrounded by blueprints,

tactical radios,

and encrypted tablets.

Marcus stood across from him,

pointing at a digital map of the Hudson shipping lanes.

"Julian is trying to cut off our western routes,

boss,

" Marcus explained,

his voice low.

"He's gathering capos from the southern district for a full syndicate meeting tomorrow night."

"If he convinces them that you've gone soft,

they will vote to strip your territorial rights."

"I haven't gone soft,

" Dominic said,

his voice smooth as polished steel.

"I've just been patient."

"Tomorrow night,

we strike their rally before they can take a vote."

"And what about Ruby?" Marcus asked quietly.

"If Julian comes for the house while you're at the docks,

she's in direct danger."

Dominic slammed his fist against the glass table,

the sound cracking through the room like a thunderclap.

"I will tear Julian's empire to ash before I let his men lay a single hand on her!"

Standing in the shadows outside the doorway,

Ruby felt her heart skip a beat at the raw,

unfiltered fierce protection in Dominic's voice.

She stepped into the light of the doorway,

crossing her arms over her chest.

"You don't have to burn the city down on my account,

Mr. Vale,

" she said firmly.

Both men turned instantly,

Marcus reaching for his holster by reflex before recognizing her.

Dominic stood up slowly,

his dark eyes locking onto her with a mixture of annoyance and deep relief.

"I told you to stay in your room,

Miss Bennett,

" Dominic growled,

though the edge was missing from his tone.

"And I told you that dirt doesn't clean itself,

and bullies don't back down just because you lock your doors,

" Ruby replied,

walking right up to the tactical table.

"If this Julian guy is using me to push you around,

"

"then locking me in a back room proves to his men that he got under your skin."

Dominic stared down at her,

fascinated by her absolute refusal to submit to fear.

"What are you suggesting,

Ruby?" Dominic asked,

his voice dropping into a low murmur.

"I'm suggesting you stop hiding behind your high walls and quiet rooms,

" Ruby said,

her eyes shining with determination.

May you like

"Show them you aren't afraid of their noise."

"And take me with you."
