Chapter 6: The Man From Sarah’s Past

The photograph haunted me.

I stared at it all night.

The man beside me.

The building behind us.

The fear in his eyes.

I didn’t remember him.

I didn’t remember that place.

But someone else did.

Someone wanted me to remember.

The next morning, Daniel arrived with a stack of papers.

“You know him?””

He placed the photograph down.

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Think carefully.””

“I’m trying.””

The man’s face felt familiar.

Not because I knew him.

Because I had seen fear like that before.

Fear in Sarah’s eyes.

Fear in Emily’s eyes.

But why?

Daniel opened a file.

“We ran the image through public records.””

“And?””

He took a breath.

“The man is named David Walker.””

The name meant nothing.

“Who is he?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Someone connected to Sarah.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

“He was her coworker five years ago.””

I stared at him.

Five years ago.

Before the accusations.

Before everything fell apart.

“What connection?””

Daniel hesitated.

“That’s what we’re trying to find out.””

The courtroom that day felt different.

People were no longer looking at me like I was already guilty.

The video had changed something.

But Sarah was still dangerous.

Because people who lose control often become desperate.

The prosecutor called Sarah back to the stand.

She looked exhausted.

Her confidence was gone.

“Mrs. Carter,” he began, “did you know about the security footage?””

Sarah swallowed.

“No.””

“Did you install those cameras?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“To protect myself and my daughter.””

The prosecutor nodded.

“Were you aware they might show events you didn’t expect?””

“No.””

Daniel stood for cross-examination.

He walked slowly.

“Mrs. Carter, do you love your daughter?””

Sarah looked offended.

“Of course.””

“Would you do anything to protect her?””

“Yes.””

“Even lie?””

The courtroom froze.

Sarah stared at him.

“No.””

Daniel held up the photograph.

“Do you know David Walker?””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“We worked together.””

“Anything else?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at the jury.

“Nothing else?””

“No.””

He placed another document down.

“Then why did Mr. Walker transfer money to your account six months ago?””

Sarah stopped breathing.

The prosecutor stood.

“Objection!””

The judge looked at Daniel.

“Foundation?””

Daniel nodded.

“We have bank records.””

The judge allowed it.

Sarah’s attorney whispered urgently.

But Sarah didn’t answer.

She looked trapped.

“Mrs. Carter,” Daniel continued, “why did David Walker send you money?””

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“I can explain.””

“Please do.””

She looked at me.

And for the first time in months, she looked ashamed.

“I was trying to fix something.””

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I can’t.””

The judge leaned forward.

“Mrs. Carter, you are under oath.””

Sarah closed her eyes.

“I can’t.””

The courtroom erupted.

The judge demanded silence.

But the damage was done.

Because everyone heard the same thing.

She knew.

She was hiding something.

After court ended, Daniel and I walked outside.

Reporters surrounded us.

Questions came from every direction.

“Michael, do you believe your wife framed you?””

“Are you innocent?””

“Did your daughter witness the crime?””

I ignored them.

Because my mind was somewhere else.

With Sarah.

With Emily.

With the secret that had been buried.

That evening, Daniel called me.

“You need to hear this.””

His voice sounded serious.

“What happened?””

“We found David Walker.””

My heart jumped.

“Where?””

“He contacted us.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“He wants to meet.””

“Why?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Because he says Sarah isn’t the person you think she is.””

I sat in silence.

Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.

“What does he know?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“He says he knows why Sarah destroyed your life.””

I looked out the window.

The city lights blurred.

Six months ago, I thought my biggest problem was proving I wasn’t a monster.

Now I realized something much worse.

May you like

Someone had created a monster.

And they needed me to take the blame for it.
