Chapter 4 - The Venom of the Matriarch

The heavy double doors of the penthouse opened to reveal Donna Carmela Rossy framed against the elevator vestibule.
She was sixty-two years old, draped in tailored black sable fur, with silver hair styled in an immaculately severe chignon.
Her face was a masterpiece of cold, aristocratic elegance, lined only by decades of ruthless dynastic ambition.
Behind her trailed two private bodyguards wearing the traditional dark insignia of the old Sicilian wing of the family.
Carmela surveyed the sunlit penthouse with thin, disdainful lips, her gaze sweeping past the modern artwork with open contempt.
When her pale blue eyes landed on Clara seated on the velvet settee, her expression hardened into pure venom.
She glided across the polished hardwood floor, the heavy gold jewelry at her wrists clinking with a rhythmic, sinister chime.
Vincent rose from his knee by the settee, his posture snapping into absolute, rigid dominance.
He addressed his mother with a tone scraped devoid of familial affection, demanding to know why she had breached his private residence.
Carmela ignored her son’s challenge, coming to a halt three paces from Clara and looking down at her like an insect.
She remarked that the rumors spreading across the social clubs of the North Side were indeed humiliatingly accurate.
She noted that the head of the Rossy syndicate had scoured roadside diners to reclaim a runaway wife who had disgraced their lineage.
Clara felt the familiar sting of Carmela’s toxic pride, but this time she did not bow her head as she once had as a young bride.
She looked Carmela directly in the eyes and stated that she had never requested to be brought back into this den of vipers.
Carmela’s lips twisted into a cruel sneer as her gaze raked over the undeniable swell of Clara’s pregnancy.
She asked Vincent how he could possibly be certain that the child carrying that low-class blood was even an authentic Rossy.
She suggested that an ex-wife who spent eight months living among transients and laborers could have shared her bed with anyone.
The atmosphere in the room crystallized into absolute, lethal silence.
Frankie and Dino stepped back toward the perimeter walls, their faces pale, recognizing the catastrophic line that had just been crossed.
Vincent took one single, terrifying stride toward his mother.
The sheer menace radiating from his frame caused Carmela’s two personal guards to drop their hands toward their holsters.
Before their fingers could touch leather, Vincent drew his custom sidearm with blinding speed and aimed it squarely at the lead guard's forehead.
He commanded the guards to remove their hands from their weapons or he would paint the ceiling with their thoughts in three seconds.
The two men froze instantly, their eyes wide with genuine panic, slowly raising their open hands into the air.
Vincent lowered the firearm slightly, turning his lethal gaze back upon his mother.
He whispered that if she ever questioned the legitimacy of his son again, he would strip her of her family stipend and banish her to Sicily before sunset.
Carmela drew in a sharp breath through her nostrils, her aristocratic composure cracking beneath the cold fury of her own flesh and blood.
She hissed that she was thinking only of the stability and honor of the Rossy dynasty.
She declared that even if the infant were indeed his son, Clara was an unfit mother who had proven herself a flight risk and a coward.
Carmela stepped closer to the settee, pointing a manicured, ringed finger directly at Clara’s face.
She proclaimed that when the child was born, custody would be transferred immediately to the family estate under proper dynastic guardians.
She added that Clara would be provided with an offshore pension and permanently barred from ever setting foot on American soil again.
Clara felt a roar of maternal instinct detonate inside her chest, eradicating every remaining ounce of fear or timidity.
She pushed herself up from the velvet settee, ignoring the sharp protest of her back, and stood toe-to-toe with the matriarch.
She told Carmela that she would tear the Rossy empire apart with her bare hands before she ever allowed a poisoned soul like hers near her child.
She declared that Carmela had turned her own sons into soulless executioners, but she would never be allowed to corrupt this boy’s life.
Carmela raised her hand as if to strike Clara across the face for her insolence.
Before her hand could descend, Vincent’s fingers locked around his mother’s wrist like an iron clamp.
He squeezed just hard enough to make the older woman gasp in shock and pain.
Vincent told his mother that Clara was the mother of his heir, and in this house, her authority was second only to his own.
He announced that Clara would raise their son here, beside him, and that no contract, tradition, or elder would ever separate them.
He twisted his wrist slightly, forcing Carmela to step back toward the entrance foyer.
He ordered Frankie to escort the Donna to the elevator bank and revoke her biometric security access to every floor of the tower immediately.
Carmela snatched her wrist back when he released it, her chest heaving with outrage and wounded vanity.
She adjusted her fur coat with trembling, furious hands, glaring at both of them with murderous hatred.
She warned Vincent that his infatuation with this weak woman would be the downfall of everything their ancestors had built.
She hissed that Antonio Moretti would smell this domestic division from across the river and strike while they were vulnerable.
Vincent did not reply; he simply pointed toward the open elevator doors with cold, unwavering finality.
Carmela turned on her designer heels and marched out of the penthouse, her guards scurrying behind her like scolded dogs.
The elevator doors sealed shut, cutting off the venom of the matriarch and restoring an uneasy quiet to the room.
Clara stood trembling in the center of the living room, the adrenaline suddenly draining from her system.
A sharp, searing pain tore across her lower abdomen, far more intense and localized than any kick the baby had delivered before.
She gasped aloud, her knees buckling beneath her as she doubled over, clutching her stomach with white knuckles.
Vincent turned instantly, catching her in his arms before she could impact the hardwood floor.
He swept her into his embrace, his calm exterior vanishing into an expression of raw, unadulterated panic.
He called out to Dino, ordering the immediate summons of Dr. Vance back to the penthouse at maximum speed.

Clara clutched Vincent’s shirt collar, her breath coming in ragged gasps as another wave of severe cramping rippled through her womb.
She whispered through gritted teeth that something was terribly wrong, and that the baby was coming far too soon.
