Chapter 13 - The Whispering Campaign

By Wednesday, the social circuit of Upper Arlington was ablaze with fabricated stories.

Marcus called me early in the morning while I was reviewing blueprints for the historic library restoration.

"Sheila’s sister went to the local press," Marcus warned, his tone grim.

"They’re shopping an article claiming you manipulated Evelyn’s dementia in her final weeks."

I opened my laptop and saw the first online tabloids picking up the story.

The headlines painted me as an opportunistic ex-con who bullied her heartbroken parents into destitution.

Anonymous comments beneath the articles accused me of elder abuse and forgery.

At two in the afternoon, my first commercial client called to pause our contract pending "clarification."

The smear campaign was surgical, designed to bleed my reputation before my business could even take flight.

Sheila had always known how to weaponize Columbus society’s obsession with appearances.

I grabbed my coat, drove straight to the law offices of Marcus Kane, and sat across from his desk.

"We don't play defense, Marcus," I said, setting Evelyn’s personal diaries on the glass table between us.

"My grandmother kept daily logs with dates, bank stubs, and witness signatures for ten years."

Marcus flipped through the pristine entries, his eyes lighting up with sharp appreciation.

"Every single lie Sheila is feeding the press contradicts Evelyn’s sworn, notarized journals."

"Then let’s call a press conference on the courthouse steps," I replied.

"We don't just clear my name. We expose who paid the journalists to print it."
