Chapter 5 - The Web Unravels

The silence inside the boardroom became heavy enough to crush bone.

Adrian’s two attorneys looked down at the forensic audit papers, their faces turning an ashen grey.

The senior lawyer leaned toward Adrian and whispered three rapid sentences into his ear.

Adrian’s head jerked back as if he had been slapped with an iron glove.

“No,” Adrian hissed at his legal counsel.

“Find a loophole! We have the marital agreement signed four years ago!”

“The marital agreement is void upon proof of pre-meditated criminal fraud, Mr. Vale,” my attorney stated clearly.

“Your wife’s late father specifically included an indemnity clause that triggered upon any unauthorized asset transfer.”

Vivian lunged toward the table, her fingernails clawing at the polished granite.

“You ungrateful little gutter rat!” Vivian screamed at me, her mask of high-society elegance shattering completely.

“We took you in when your father died! We gave you a name! We gave you a position in society!”

“You gave me a cage,” I replied, not flinching an inch from her venomous spit.

“You lived in my father’s penthouse, you drove the cars purchased with his sweat, and you treated me like an unpaid maid.”

“Enough,” Eleanor Whitmore’s voice rang out, striking the mahogany table like a gavel.

The single word carried so much raw authority that Vivian choked on her next breath and fell silent.

Eleanor turned her dark glasses toward Adrian’s general direction.

“Mr. Vale, you have until twelve o’clock noon to wire the liquid balance of forty-five million dollars.”

“If the funds are not in our clearing account by the final chime of the midday bell, my security teams will act.”

“What security teams?” Adrian whispered, his arrogant swagger reduced to a pathetic stammer.

“The sheriff’s department is currently standing by outside the Vale Tower with a court-ordered seizure writ.”

I leaned forward, locking my eyes onto Adrian’s trembling pupils.

“They are waiting for my direct signal to lock the revolving doors, impound the executive vehicles, and freeze every corporate bank account.”

“Claire, please,” Adrian pleaded, his voice suddenly shifting into that familiar, manipulative purr he had used for years.

He rounded the table, attempting to reach for my hand with an expression of manufactured remorse.

“We can talk about this in private, darling,” he murmured, his eyes wide and moist.

“I was stressed last night. The market pressure was driving me insane. You know how much I love you.”

“Don't touch me,” I said, my voice dropping to a deadly whisper.

Thomas stepped between us, his massive frame blocking Adrian like an impenetrable brick wall.

Adrian stopped, staring at the broad chest of the bodyguard before looking down at his own trembling hands.

“You’re really going to destroy everything my grandfather built?” Adrian asked, his voice shaking with hatred.

“Your grandfather built an empire, Adrian,” I answered, leaning back in Eleanor’s chair.

“You and your mother turned it into a criminal extortion racket.”

“You destroyed yourself the moment you rolled down that car window and threw me into the mud.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened until the muscles in his cheeks bulged.

“Lila has the backup drives,” he spat, dropping all pretense of affection.

“You think you have the only copies of those trust accounts?”

“Lila encrypted the entire financial server at four o’clock this morning.”

“You won’t be able to prove a single wire transfer without the decryption keys she holds.”

A slow, cold laugh slipped past my lips before I could stop it.

I looked at the double doors at the far end of the room and gave a slight nod.

The door opened, and Lila walked into the boardroom, flanked by two uniformed federal investigators.

She was no longer wearing Adrian’s silk dressing gown.

She was dressed in a drab grey sweater, her makeup smeared with tears, and her wrists were secured in steel handcuffs.

In the hands of the leading federal agent was a heavy black external hard drive sealed inside an evidence bag.

Adrian staggered backward until his spine slammed into the glass wall overlooking the city.

“Lila?” Adrian gasped, his breath hitching in his chest.

Lila looked at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated venom.

“They caught me at the airport terminal, Adrian,” Lila cried out, her voice echoing off the granite walls.

“You booked me on that flight to Zurich and promised you would meet me there next week!”

“You were using me as the fall guy for your embezzlement!”

“Shut up!” Adrian roared, lunging toward her before Thomas grabbed his arm and twisted it behind his back with surgical precision.

Adrian cried out in agony, his knees dropping to the hard floor.

“Lila has already signed a full confession under the supervision of federal prosecutors,” my attorney announced smoothly.

“She has surrendered the encryption keys, the offshore account ledgers, and the recorded audio files of your phone calls.”

Eleanor Whitmore stood up slowly, her brass cane tapping once against the stone floor.

“The clock is ticking, Mr. Vale,” the blind matriarch announced.

May you like

“It is currently eleven o’clock and forty-five minutes.”

“You have fifteen minutes to produce forty-five million dollars, or you will leave this building in federal custody.”
