Chapter 6 - The Bail Hearing Humiliation

The following morning at nine o'clock, the high-profile courtroom of the Dutchess County Supreme Court was packed with reporters, corporate onlookers, and media cameras.
Julian and Evelyn Vance were brought into the prisoner box wearing orange correctional jumpsuits instead of their usual bespoke wool suits and silk blouses.
Evelyn looked entirely unhinged.
Her hair was unwashed, her posture hunched, and her eyes darted frantically across the gallery looking for friendly faces among the country club crowd.
Not a single one of her wealthy socialite friends had shown up.
The news of what she had done to a newlywed woman had spread like wildfire across the morning news broadcasts.
Julian sat beside his public defense attorney, his face pale and glistening with cold sweat.
Their high-priced corporate defense team had abruptly dropped them two hours earlier when Meridian Bank frozen all company assets, rendering the Vance retainer checks utterly worthless.
The heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.
The murmuring crowd fell into an immediate, breathless hush.
I walked through the aisle, flanked by my father on my right and our senior legal counsel on my left.
I wore an impeccably tailored navy blazer, tailored trousers, and dark, polarized designer sunglasses to protect my recovering corneas.
My head was held high.
My back was straight as a steel rod.
The reporters’ cameras clicked in a relentless frenzy as I took my seat in the front row of the victim’s gallery.
Julian gasped, his knuckles turning white against the defense table.
“Clara!” Julian blurted out, attempting to stand before the courtroom bailiff pushed him firmly back into his chair.
“Clara, tell them to drop the charges! Please, you know this is all an insane misunderstanding!”
“Silence in the court!” Judge Eleanor Vance—a veteran jurist known for her zero-tolerance stance on domestic abuse—struck her gavel with resounding thunder.
Evelyn leaned forward, clutching the wooden railing, her shrill voice breaking across the courtroom.
“Your Honor! That woman is a scheming fraud!” Evelyn shrieked, pointing a shaking finger directly at me.
“She concealed her real identity! She trapped my son into marriage under false pretenses!”
“She is using her family’s illegal monopoly to destroy our multi-generational company!”
Judge Eleanor leaned over her high mahogany bench, her gaze piercing Evelyn like a laser.
“Mrs. Vance, another outburst like that and I will hold you in summary contempt with an immediate thirty-day jail sanction,” the judge warned in a voice like granite.
The district attorney, Sarah Jenkins, rose to address the bench.
“Your Honor, the state is requesting remand without bail for both defendants,” Jenkins argued forcefully.
“We have obtained high-definition video evidence capturing the defendants systematically holding the victim down and spraying industrial-strength lye and ammonium cleaner directly into her eyes.”
“Furthermore, the physical evidence was recovered from a hidden crawl space after the defendant, Evelyn Vance, ordered domestic staff to destroy it.”
“Julian Vance attempted to wipe local server recordings.”
“This was not an accident.”
“This was premeditated, depraved indifference to human life, motivated by unbridled domestic cruelty.”
Julian’s court-appointed attorney attempted to mount a meager defense.
“Your Honor, my clients have deep roots in the community and pose no physical flight risk—”
“The defendants hold multiple private foreign bank accounts and an offshore sailing yacht registered in the Bahamas,” Jenkins countered instantly, presenting a certified financial disclosure to the clerk.
“Moreover, the victim’s life was fundamentally altered within twenty-four hours of marriage.”
“To grant bail would pose an intolerable risk of witness tampering and intimidation.”
Judge Eleanor nodded slowly, reviewing the forensic medical photographs of my chemically burned corneas submitted under seal.
The judge’s face tightened with visible horror as she looked at the photographs of my blistered epithelial tissue.
She looked up, fixing her gaze squarely on Julian and Evelyn.
“In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed such an appalling display of cruelty carried out within a domestic setting,” Judge Eleanor said, her voice echoing through the silent chamber.
“Bail is denied for both defendants.”
“You will be remanded to the Dutchess County Correctional Facility until trial commences.”
Julian dropped his face into his hands, sobbing openly as the reality of his confinement crashed down upon him.
Evelyn began to scream hysterically, thrashing against the court bailiffs as they pulled her backward toward the holding cell doors.
“You cannot do this to me!” Evelyn wailed, her aristocratic mask completely gone.
“I am an elite! I am Evelyn Vance! You common degenerates have no right to touch me!”
As the bailiffs dragged her past the gallery rail, our eyes met through my polarized lenses.
I slowly lifted my sunglasses, revealing the swollen, blood-red sclera of my right eye and the healing scar tissue that Julian and she had created.
I didn't utter a single curse.
I simply looked at her with an absolute, unyielding stillness that sent a jolt of raw terror through her soul.

Evelyn gasped, stumbled over her own feet, and was dragged through the iron security door, her panicked cries fading into the concrete depths of the courthouse basement.
