Chapter 15 - The Trap Springs

The air in the library became utterly unbreathable.

I stared at the man who had raised me, searching for even a fragment of humanity, and found only an abyss of corporate vanity.

"You really thought I would agree to this?" I whispered, my voice chillingly calm.

Victoria set down her champagne flute, her manicured fingers tapping impatiently on the mahogany table.

"You don't have a card left to play, Sebastian," she mocked, leaning forward.

"We’ve already initiated the hostile takeover of Metropolitan Memorial's pharmaceutical supplier."

"By six o'clock tomorrow morning, every supply manifest carrying our pulmonary surfactants will be impounded under trade dispute litigation."

"The hospital board has already convened an emergency session."

"They know you are the reason the supply chain is freezing."

"How long do you think Rowan Miller will look at you with love when she watches her first neonatal patient suffocate because of your stubbornness?"

The sheer depravity of their scheme made my stomach heave with revulsion.

They had constructed an impossible moral vice designed to crush my conscience into dust.

"You underestimate Rowan," I said, meeting Victoria’s cold eyes.

"And you fundamentally misunderstand who I am now."

Richard struck the hardwood floor with his cane, the sound echoing like a gunshot.

"Enough of this self-righteous nonsense!" he barked, his face flushing crimson with uncontrolled rage.

"Sign the document, Sebastian!"

"Reclaim your rightful place as the chief executive of this family, or watch your precious hospital turn into a morgue!"

I looked at the thick stack of legal documents resting on the mahogany desk.

Beside it lay a gold Montblanc pen, engraved with the Caldwell family coat of arms.

I walked slowly toward the desk.

Victoria smiled, leaning back against the cushions with an air of absolute triumph.

Richard adjusted his silk cuffs, assuming his prodigal son had finally broken beneath the weight of hereditary obligation.

I reached out, my fingers curling around the heavy gold pen.

The attorneys leaned forward, ready to witness the signatures that would seal my eternal enslavement to Caldwell Therapeutics.

I looked down at the contract, at the clause that stipulated the permanent severance of parental rights over my son, James.

I took a deep, steadying breath, picturing James’s bright eyes and the soft warmth of Rowan’s lips against mine that morning.

Then, with a single, deliberate motion, I snapped the gold fountain pen in half over the contract.

Dark blue ink exploded across the pristine parchment, splattering the signature lines and staining my father’s precious legal parchment with indelible black venom.

"I would rather die in the gutter than spend another second under your roof," I said coldly.

"And as for the surfactant patents, Richard..."

May you like

I pulled a flash drive from my wet trench coat pocket and tossed it onto the ink-stained documents.

"You forgot that I was the lead clinical researcher on those original pulmonary formulas five years ago."
