Chapter 14 - The Golden Boy's Penthouse

The corridors of the Peninsula were carpeted in thick damask that muffled my heels.
Two private security officers from my personal detail flanked me on either side.
When we reached Suite 1204, I didn't wait for room service to open the door.
My chief of security inserted an electronic override card into the lock.
The deadbolt clicked open with a polite chime.
Inside, the scent of expensive cigars and vintage Dom Pérignon was thick enough to choke on.
Julian was sitting on an ivory velvet sofa, wearing a silk robe and talking on an encrypted satellite phone.
Across the marble table sat an open briefcase filled with stacks of bearer bonds and a Swiss passport.
When the door swung open, Julian jumped to his feet, knocking a crystal tumbler of scotch onto the wool rug.
"What the hell is this?" he shouted, his face turning bright red.
"You can't barge in here!"
"This is a private suite!"
"Paid for with an embezzled Vance Holdings corporate card," I said, stepping into the center of the room.
My security guards closed the door behind us and crossed their arms, blocking the exit.
Julian looked past me, his arrogant smirk returning as he recognized my face.
"Ah, Claire," he chuckled, though his eyes darted toward the briefcase on the table.
"The queen of the sky has finally descended to earth."
"Did Mom call you crying?"
"Did Dad tell you how much of an ungrateful daughter you are?"
"Dad is in Cherry Hill eating microwave soup," I replied, my voice steady as steel.
"While you sit here with bearer bonds funded by Uncle Christopher."
Julian's smirk froze for half a second before he recovered his mask.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Apex Sovereign is a legitimate international lender."
"I am the Vice President of Strategic Expansion for Vance Holdings."
"I had every right to pledge corporate equity for our family's future."
"You are not an officer of my company, Julian," I said, walking toward him until only the coffee table separated us.
"You have never worked a single eight-hour day in your miserable life."
"You forged the minutes."
"You had Arthur witness a fraudulent corporate resolution."
"And you delivered that resolution to Christopher Vance in exchange for a payoff."
Julian scoffed and threw his hands into the air.
"So what if I did?"
"You have everything, Claire!"
"Look at this city!"
"You own three buildings on Madison Avenue!"
"You own the penthouse at 432 Park!"
"You have hundreds of millions in private equity, and what did I get?"
"A kick in the teeth from our parents every time one of my businesses went under!"
"They gave you every dime they ever saved!" I snapped, my calm finally cracking into raw fury.
"They bankrupted their retirement to cover your margin calls!"
"They took out a reverse mortgage on their home so you could pretend to be a venture capitalist!"
"And when they had nothing left to bleed, you came after me!"
"Because you owe me!" Julian screamed, his veins bulging in his neck.
"Mom and Dad loved me more!"
"They believed in me!"
"You were just the stubborn, bitter little girl who worked in a cubicle because you didn't have charisma!"
"You got lucky in the market, Claire."
"That fortune belongs to the Vance family."
"Not just you."
I looked at him, feeling a sudden wave of profound, absolute pity.
He was thirty-two years old, yet he was still the same spoiled eight-year-old boy who had broken my childhood toys and watched our mother blame me for leaving them on the floor.
"Look at the summons, Julian," I said softly.
"Christopher Vance didn't name you as an officer in the Delaware suit."
"He named you as a co-conspirator."
"The moment Apex Sovereign takes control of Vance Holdings, the first thing they are doing is filing criminal fraud charges against you to wipe out your claim to the loan proceeds."
Julian's eyes widened.
"That's a lie."
"Christopher promised me five million in Zurich."
"Christopher Vance spent twenty years destroying companies from Geneva," I said, sliding Marcus's background report across the marble table.
"He doesn't share meat with the hyena that led him to the carcass."
May you like
"You were the bait, Julian."
"And now the trap is closing."
