Chapter 19 - The Final Waltz at Vance Global

The headquarters of Vance Global stood like a monolith of glass and steel against the Chicago skyline,

a monument to the arrogance of men who thought they were gods.

I walked through the lobby,

my head held high,

wearing the same suit I had worn to Ethan’s homecoming dinner.

The security guards recognized me,

nodding with a mixture of pity and respect.

They didn't know I was carrying enough digital explosives to level the company’s reputation forever.

I took the elevator to the top floor,

the numbers ticking upward like a countdown.

The doors opened to the executive suite,

where the air was thin and smelled of expensive lilies.

The Chairman’s secretary tried to stop me,

but I brushed past her,

opening the double doors to the corner office.

Chairman Sterling sat behind his desk,

a man of seventy with the eyes of a shark.

He looked up,

a slow,

practiced smile spreading across his face.

"Mabel.

I was sorry to hear about Ethan’s...

troubles.

I assume you’re here for the settlement papers?"

I walked to the desk and placed the ledger and the micro-SD card on the polished wood.

"I’m here for the truth,

Mr. Sterling.

And I’m here to tell you that the audit was a mistake."

He chuckled,

leaning back in his leather chair.

"A mistake?

Ethan stole millions."

"He stole from you,"

I corrected him,

leaning over the desk until we were eye to eye.

"But you stole from everyone else.

I have the recordings of the Chicago meetings.

I have the list of the 'investors' you’ve been paying off.

And I have the evidence that you used my foundation to fund it all."

The smile vanished,

replaced by a cold,

dead stare.

"You think you can walk out of here with that?

You’re a housewife,

Mabel.

A romantic who got her heart broken."

"I was a housewife,"

I said,

my voice echoing in the large room.

"But three years of waiting turned me into something else.

And right now,

I’m the only thing standing between you and a life sentence."

I pulled my phone from my pocket.

"This is a live stream,

Mr. Sterling.

Elena is at the local news station,

and the FBI is already in the building.

If I don't walk out of here in five minutes,

the encryption key is released to every major news outlet in the country."

The silence in the room was absolute.

The Chairman looked at the ledger,

then at the phone,

realizing that he had underestimated the one person he thought he could control.

The doors burst open,

and this time it wasn't the "cleaning crew. "

It was a team of federal agents,

led by Arthur,

who had been working with Elena all along.

The Chairman didn't fight.

He just sat there,

a fallen god in a glass tower,

as they read him his rights.

I walked past him,

not feeling triumph,

only a profound sense of relief.

The war was over.

The monsters were being put back in their cages.

And for the first time in three years,

the name Mabel Vance meant something more than a victim.
