Chapter 11 - The Shadow at the Water’s Edge

The morning mist clung to the surface of Lake Michigan like a damp,
suffocating shroud,
blurring the line where the grey water met the grey sky.
I stood at the edge of the pier,
the wood beneath my boots slick with the condensation of a thousand lonely nights.
The message on my phone felt like a hot coal in my pocket,
burning through the fabric,
demanding my attention.
I didn't know who I was meeting,
only that they held a piece of the puzzle I hadn't even known was missing.
The wind whipped my hair across my face,
stinging my eyes,
but I didn't move.
I was waiting for a ghost.
Footsteps echoed behind me,
hollow and rhythmic,
striking the boards with a deliberate slowness.
I turned,
my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
A woman emerged from the fog,
tall and slender,
wrapped in a trench coat that looked far too expensive for a casual morning walk.
She wasn't Chloe.
She was older,
her face etched with a sophisticated kind of weariness.
Her eyes were sharp,
piercing through the mist with a predatory clarity.
"Mabel Vance,"
she said,
her voice like velvet dragged over gravel.
"You look exactly like the photos Ethan kept on his desk."
I stiffened,
my hands clenching into fists inside my coat pockets.
"And who are you?
Another one of his 'distractions' from Chicago?"
The woman laughed,
a cold,
mirthless sound that was lost to the wind.
"Hardly.
My name is Elena.
I was Ethan’s predecessor in Chicago,
the one he replaced when he 'expanded' the office."
She stepped closer,
until I could smell the scent of expensive cigarettes and regret.
"He didn't just take my job,
Mabel.
He took my life’s work,
and he did it by burying the bodies of his financial crimes in my backyard."
I looked at her,
trying to find a lie in the hard lines of her face.
"What are you talking about?
The audit is already happening.
They know about the money he spent on Chloe."
Elena shook her head,
a small,
pitying smile playing on her lips.
"The Chloe money is a rounding error,
Mabel.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg he used to distract you."
She reached into her bag and pulled out a small,
silver flash drive.
"This contains the recordings of the private board meetings he held in Chicago.
Meetings you weren't supposed to know about.
Meetings where he didn't just move money,
he laundered it."
The world seemed to tilt on its axis.
I grabbed the railing of the pier,
the cold metal biting into my palms.
"Laundered?
For who?"
"For people who don't care about divorce settlements or corporate reputations,"
Elena whispered,
her eyes darting around the empty pier.
"Ethan isn't just a cheater,
Mabel.
He’s a criminal.
And if you don't use this correctly,
he’s going to make sure you’re the one who takes the fall for all of it."
She pressed the drive into my hand,
her skin feeling like ice.
"He’s been setting you up for three years,
putting your name on the shell companies.
Check the signatures,
Mabel.
Really check them."
Before I could ask another question,
May you like
she turned and vanished back into the fog,
leaving me alone with the weight of a secret that could end my life.
