Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Ledgers

Dawn broke over the Hudson River in streaks of cold lavender and bruised gold.

The private recovery suite on the top floor of the hospital was guarded by thirty heavily armed men whose loyalty to Dante had been tested in blood.

Isla lay in the center of a wide hospital bed, surrounded by soft cotton blankets and a brand-new mountain of stuffed animals Victor had personally cleared from a Fifth Avenue toy store.

Her breathing was deep, effortless, and rhythmic, color returning to her round cheeks like roses blooming after a brutal frost.

Her small hand rested over the pristine white bandages covering her chest, her fingers loosely tangled in the silver chain of Isabella's rose-and-anchor charm.

Clara sat in a chair beside the mattress, her head resting against the edge of the mattress, finally succumbing to an hour of exhausted sleep.

Dante stood at the foot of the bed, watching his daughter with an expression of quiet reverence that looked foreign on his hardened features.

Marcus entered the suite silently, holding a tarnished brass key and a water-damaged leather-bound ledger recovered from Adrian’s abandoned safehouse in Hoboken.

"We intercepted his chopper team at the Teterboro runway," Marcus whispered, keeping his voice beneath Clara’s slumber.

"Adrian didn't make the flight."

"He slipped into the subway tunnels near 14th Street with two bodyguards and a briefcase full of bearer bonds."

"He’s running out of cash, and the Costa family has closed their doors to him after we leveled their harbor warehouse last night."

Dante took the brass key from Marcus, turning the heavy metal over in his palm.

"What did you find in the safehouse?" Dante asked.

Marcus looked uneasy, his gaze drifting toward Clara’s sleeping figure.

"It wasn't just Adrian, Boss."

"Six years ago, before the hospital fire, Isabella had discovered that Adrian was embezzling sixty million dollars through the foundation's port development fund."

"She didn't tell you because she knew you would kill him, and she wanted you to break the cycle of violence before the baby was born."

"She went to Adrian directly, gave him forty-eight hours to return the money and resign from the board."

Dante’s jaw locked, his knuckles whitening around the brass key until the metal bit into his flesh.

"She tried to save his soul," Dante murmured, his voice thick with a dark, bitter sorrow.

"And he bought potassium chloride and paid an orderly to poison her drip."

"There’s more," Marcus said, stepping closer.

"The ledger shows that Adrian set up an offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands called 'La Rosa'."

"Every dollar he stole from the foundation was routed through that account."

"And the only co-signer who can release those funds... is the legal heir to Isabella’s estate."

"He didn't just want Isla dead to cover his tracks, Boss."

"If Isla died after being legally identified, Adrian had a forged will prepared that would transfer the entire estate directly into his trust."

A quiet rustle came from the bed as Isla shifted beneath her blankets.

Her long chestnut lashes fluttered, and she slowly opened her hazel eyes, blinking against the soft morning sunlight streaming through the blinds.

She looked around the strange, bright room, her gaze passing over the medical monitors before landing directly upon Dante.

"Papa?" she called out, her voice small, raspy, but remarkably clear.

The word hit Dante like a physical blow, knocking the breath from his lungs and shattering the last fortress of his detachment.

He crossed the room in two strides, dropping to his knees beside the low hospital bed so that his eyes were level with hers.

"I'm here, little bird," Dante whispered, his voice rough and uneven as he carefully took her small, warm hand in both of his.

"Did you fix my heart?" Isla asked, pointing her finger at the clean white bandage beneath her hospital gown.

"Dr. Clara fixed it," Dante said, glancing at the woman who was slowly stirring from her sleep beside them.

"She gave you a heart as strong as an iron ship."

Isla looked at him with that same calm, unyielding curiosity that had halted three hundred billionaires in the St. Regis ballroom.

"Does that mean I can sit on your sofa whenever I want?" she asked seriously.

Dante swallowed the heavy lump in his throat, a rare, genuine smile curving the corners of his lips for the first time in six years.

"That seat was made for you before you were even born," Dante promised, pressing his forehead gently against the back of her small hand.

"No one will ever take it from you again."

Clara sat up slowly, wiping her eyes and watching the father and daughter with a mixture of overwhelming relief and lingering grief.

"Dante," Clara said softly, her voice still rough from exhaustion.

"Adrian knows where we are."

"A man with nothing left to lose is more dangerous than an army with tanks."

Dante rose slowly to his feet, the warmth in his face instantly transforming back into the cold, terrifying majesty of the underworld king.

"Adrian has everything to lose, Clara," Dante said, sliding the heavy brass key into his vest pocket.

"His money, his freedom, and his breath."

"And by sunset tonight, I will collect all three."
