Chapter 17 - The Invisible Eyes in the Dark

I sprinted frantically,

recklessly back toward the safety of the warm,

lit cottage,

my shoes slipping dangerously on the wet,

slick gravel,

my mind racing through a thousand,

terrifyingly chaotic scenarios,

unable to comprehend how they had found our secret,

hidden sanctuary.

I burst violently through the heavy,

wooden front door,

locking the sturdy,

brass deadbolt instantly behind me,

leaning heavily against the cool wood,

panting loudly,

desperately trying to control the massive,

overwhelming panic attack that was tearing through my chest.

Arthur dropped his ceramic,

steaming coffee mug the exact second he saw my pale,

bloodless face,

the hot,

dark liquid splashing messily across the pristine,

hardwood floor,

his sharp,

experienced instincts instantly realizing that a terrible,

deadly threat had breached our perimeter.

"What happened?"

Arthur demanded sharply,

his voice low,

urgent,

and entirely stripped of his usual,

gentle grandfatherly warmth,

his weathered hands already reaching instinctively for the heavy,

loaded hunting rifle he kept securely locked in the tall,

glass cabinet.

"Someone was at the school,"

I choked out,

tears of pure,

unadulterated terror streaming hotly,

freely down my trembling cheeks,

handing him the crumpled,

terrifying photograph with shaking,

unsteady fingers.

Arthur stared at the chilling,

intrusive image,

his jaw clenching so tightly I could actually hear his teeth grinding together,

his old,

faded eyes hardening into two cold,

unforgiving chips of solid gray ice,

radiating a fierce,

protective fury.

"Call Sarah,"

Arthur commanded firmly,

his tone leaving absolutely no room for argument,

"tell her to use every single,

high-level federal contact she has,

we need to know exactly who is running the remnants of that corrupt,

evil empire."

I grabbed my secure,

encrypted cell phone,

my fingers slipping clumsily on the smooth glass screen as I desperately,

frantically dialed my sister's private number,

praying she would answer immediately,

needing her sharp,

analytical mind to help me navigate this new,

horrifying nightmare.

Sarah picked up on the very first,

anxious ring,

and within seconds of hearing my panicked,

shaking voice describe the black,

unmarked envelope,

her journalistic instincts transformed instantly into a ruthless,

military-grade investigative operation.

"I am pulling the prison visitation logs right now,"

Sarah typed rapidly,

the loud,

aggressive clacking of her mechanical keyboard echoing sharply through the phone speaker,

"if your mother-in-law is orchestrating this from inside her maximum-security cell,

she has to be using a loyal,

outside proxy."

Hours passed in a tense,

suffocating state of absolute,

paralyzing paranoia,

with Arthur systematically,

carefully checking every single lock,

window,

and hidden,

shadowy corner of our property,

treating our peaceful home like an active,

hostile war zone.

I picked Leo up from school hours early,

holding his small,

warm hand so tightly that he actually complained,

my eyes scanning every single parked car,

every distant,

shadowy alleyway,

seeing potential,

deadly assassins in the faces of ordinary,

innocent pedestrians.

That evening,

as the dark,

heavy clouds rolled aggressively over the stormy,

turbulent ocean,

Sarah finally called back,

her voice incredibly tense,

heavy,

and filled with a dark,

ominous dread that made my blood run entirely,

freezing cold.

"Your husband's father had a secret,

illegitimate son,"

Sarah revealed breathlessly,

dropping a massive,

explosive bombshell that shattered everything I thought I knew about that deeply twisted,

corrupt family,

"a younger half-brother named Julian,

kept completely hidden from high society,

used strictly as a violent,

off-the-books enforcer."

Julian had supposedly lost his massive,

illegal inheritance when the government seized the family assets,

and he blamed me entirely,

personally for the spectacular,

humiliating destruction of his wealthy,

powerful bloodline,

seeking absolute,

ruthless vengeance for his imprisoned family.

"He is incredibly dangerous,

highly trained,

and absolutely,

clinically insane,"

Sarah warned desperately,

"and according to the frantic,

intercepted chatter from the federal wiretaps,

May you like

Julian is already in your coastal town,

hunting you right now."
