Chapter 13 - The Final Judgement

The massive,

imposing federal courthouse was entirely surrounded by a chaotic,

screaming sea of aggressive reporters,

flashing cameras,

and curious,

angry onlookers,

all desperate to catch a glimpse of the spectacular,

unprecedented downfall of the once-untouchable,

elite family.

I walked proudly up the wide,

marble steps,

flanked by Sarah on one side and a team of heavily armed,

serious federal marshals on the other,

holding my head incredibly high,

refusing to hide my face from the glaring,

intrusive lenses of the hungry media.

I wore a tailored,

elegant maternity dress that perfectly accentuated my beautiful,

growing bump,

a powerful,

visual reminder to the entire world,

and specifically to the jury,

of the precious,

innocent life they had so callously tried to extinguish in the dark,

lonely woods.

Inside the grand,

wood-paneled courtroom,

the heavy,

suffocating tension was incredibly palpable,

thick enough to cut with a knife,

as I took my designated seat directly behind the aggressive,

brilliant lead prosecutor.

My husband sat hunched over the defense table,

wearing an oversized,

bright orange prison jumpsuit that made him look incredibly fragile,

weak,

and entirely insignificant,

his pale,

sunken eyes refusing to meet my unwavering,

steely gaze.

My sister-in-law was called to the wooden witness stand first,

having accepted a highly conditional,

strict plea deal in exchange for her full,

unvarnished testimony against her own corrupt,

murderous flesh and blood.

She sobbed violently throughout her entire,

grueling hours-long examination,

detailing the intense,

psychological manipulation inflicted by their ruthless mother,

confirming every single horrifying,

gruesome detail of the burial,

painting a vivid,

terrifying picture that left the jury absolutely,

visibly sickened.

Then,

it was finally my turn to take the heavy,

wooden oath,

stepping carefully up to the elevated stand,

placing my hand firmly on the ancient,

leather-bound Bible,

swearing to tell the absolute,

unfiltered truth.

The courtroom fell entirely,

eerily silent,

every single pair of eyes locked intently on my face,

as I calmly,

clearly recounted the unimaginable,

harrowing terror of feeling the heavy,

damp soil pressing violently against my chest,

describing the agonizing,

burning pain of the deep cut on my forehead.

I spoke directly,

unflinchingly to the attentive,

sympathetic jury members,

refusing to let my voice shake,

refusing to shed a single,

weak tear,

displaying the incredible,

unbreakable strength that only a fiercely protective mother can possess.

When the defense attorney attempted a weak,

pathetic cross-examination,

trying desperately to poke tiny,

insignificant holes in my solid,

corroborated timeline,

the formidable judge shut him down immediately,

recognizing the desperate,

futile flailing of a thoroughly defeated man.

The jury deliberations were incredibly,

shockingly brief,

taking less than three hours to return to the tense,

quiet courtroom with their final,

devastating verdict,

holding a small,

folded piece of white paper that contained the absolute destruction of his future.

Guilty on all major,

felony counts,

including conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree,

aggravated assault with a deadly weapon,

and massive,

widespread financial fraud,

ensuring he would never breathe the free,

untainted air outside of a concrete prison yard again.

As the heavy,

wooden gavel slammed down with a loud,

final crack,

sealing his miserable,

pathetic fate forever,

my husband finally looked back at me,

his face contorted in a mask of absolute,

pure terror and profound,

inescapable regret.

I did not smile,

I did not gloat,

I simply turned my back on his sobbing,

broken figure,

walking slowly,

confidently out of the grand courtroom,

leaving the dark,

May you like

toxic ghost of my past permanently trapped behind those heavy,

oak doors.
