Chapter 17 - The Strategy of Midnight

By two o'clock in the morning, my kitchen on Queen Anne Hill was transformed into a tactical war room.

Emma stood over the kitchen island, organizing printed spreadsheets into three distinct color-coded binders.

Lucas was mirroring the data from Julianna’s silver drive across four encrypted cloud servers.

Arthur was on a secure video link with our chief corporate litigator, Sarah Sterling—no relation to Marcus, but an attorney who despised his predatory tactics with a passion.

David Vance, who had driven through the night from Olympia, sat quietly at the end of the table, his reading glasses perched on his nose as he reviewed the original 2012 loan agreements.

"The chain of custody on these documents is immaculate," David said, his judicial demeanor shining through the fatigue.

"Julianna kept every original email, every wire transfer confirmation, and every voice memo Marcus sent her regarding the Manchester pipeline."

"Will this stop the maritime arrest tomorrow at ten, David?" Emma asked, looking up from her binders.

"A foreign creditor filing a maritime lien under maritime admiralty law has a high presumption of validity," David explained carefully.

"Federal judges in the Western District don't like to intervene in international maritime debt unless there is prima facie evidence of an ongoing criminal conspiracy under RICO."

"We have the RICO evidence right here," Lucas said, tapping his screen.

"Marcus Sterling used the exact same Panamanian shell company to finance two illegal fuel transfers in San Pedro last year."

"The California Attorney General already has an open sealed indictment against the vessel *The Northern Star*."

"And guess which vessel is scheduled to dock at Pier 44 tomorrow at dawn?"

"The *Northern Star*," Arthur growled from the screen.

"Marcus isn't just trying to seize the pier through the courts, Claire."

"He’s bringing the contraband ship into our slip before the judge even signs the order."

"If that ship docks under our port authority concession code, the federal marshals will seize the entire terminal as a designated crime scene."

"We won't just lose the civil lawsuit; the entire Montgomery estate will be frozen under federal asset forfeiture."

The room fell silent.

The brilliance of Marcus Sterling’s trap was breathtaking in its malevolence.

If the judge ruled against us, we lost the pier through civil default.

If we delayed the court hearing, the ship would dock, the contraband would be found, and we would lose the pier through criminal forfeiture.

Either way, the Montgomery name would be eradicated from the Seattle waterfront.

"Mom?" Emma asked, her eyes searching mine. "What do we do?"

I walked over to the kitchen window and looked down at the dark waters of Elliot Bay.

The harbor lights twinkled through the rain like scattered diamonds on black velvet.

For twenty-four years, Michael had made me believe that peace was maintained by absorbing blows, by keeping quiet, by cleaning up the shattered glass after his drunken rampages through our lives.

I had thought my shield was my greatest virtue.

I was wrong.

A shield only prolongs the siege.

To win a war, you have to bring down the gate.

"Lucas," I said, turning back to the table.

"Call the commander of the Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound."

"Tell him William Montgomery’s daughter is calling in the grandfather easement on Pier 44."

"Arthur, get the harbor pilots on the radio."

"Tell them that effective immediately, no foreign-flagged vessel enters slip four without my personal physical counter-signature on the pilotage slip."

"And Emma," I said, looking at my daughter, whose eyes flashed with fierce Montgomery pride.

"Call every local news desk from Vancouver to Portland."

"Tell them the Port of Seattle is holding an emergency press briefing at Pier 44 at eight o'clock tomorrow morning."

"What are you going to tell them, Claire?" David Vance asked softly.

May you like

"I’m going to tell them the truth," I said.

"And then I’m going to show them the bodies Marcus Sterling buried under the dock."
