Chapter 3 - Stranded in Sin City

Two thousand miles away,

in the lavish lobby of the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas,

the air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume,

stale champagne,

and sudden panic.

Eric Dawson stood at the front desk,

wearing his bespoke gray suit,

his hair slightly disheveled from a night of heavy drinking and celebrating.

Beside him stood Vanessa,

clutching a bouquet of white roses,

her silk bridal dress slightly wrinkled,

a triumphant smile still lingering on her lips.

"I'm sorry,

sir," the front desk clerk said,

her voice polite,

trained,

yet undeniably firm.

"The card has been declined."

Eric frowned,

pulling out another card from his sleek leather wallet,

sliding it across the polished marble counter.

"Try this one," he said,

waving his hand dismissively.

"Must be a system glitch,

I have a unlimited credit limit on that account."

The clerk slid the second card through the terminal,

waited three seconds,

and looked up with an expression of cold professional pity.

"This one is also declined,

Mr. Dawson."

Vanessa’s smile faltered,

her eyes widening as she leaned over the counter.

"That's impossible," she said,

her voice high-pitched and nervous.

"We're staying in the penthouse suite! We have bottle service reserved at the pool in an hour!"

"Sir,

the hotel requires a valid form of payment for the room charge,

the incidentals,

and the resort fees," the clerk explained,

her eyes signaling to a security guard standing near the entrance.

"The current outstanding balance for your stay is fourteen thousand,

eight hundred and twenty dollars."

Eric’s face flushed bright red,

a mixture of anger and humiliation washing over his features.

"Let me call my bank," he snapped,

pulling his custom smartphone from his pocket.

He dialed the customer service number on the back of his card,

placed the phone to his ear,

and waited.

Nothing happened.

No ringing tone,

no automated voice,

no signal bars at the top of the screen.

Instead,

a small pop-up notification appeared across the display:

No Cellular Service. Device Disconnected from Network.

"What the hell?" Eric muttered,

tapping the screen frantically.

"My phone isn't working!"

"Use mine!" Vanessa said,

handing him her phone with trembling fingers.

"Call Claire! Demand to know what she’s doing!"

Eric snatched Vanessa's phone,

dialed my number,

and brought it to his ear.

It rang once.

Then twice.

Then a recorded message played:

"The party you are trying to reach is not accepting calls from this number."

Eric stood frozen in the middle of the crowded hotel lobby,

the noise of the slot machines and laughing tourists fading into a dull,

distant roar.

The cold,

terrifying truth was finally beginning to penetrate his alcohol-soaked brain.

Claire hadn't cried.

Claire hadn't panicked.

Claire hadn't sent fifty furious text messages demanding an explanation.

She had quietly,

methodically,

and systematically stripped him of everything that made him feel powerful.

"Eric..." Vanessa whispered,

her voice trembling as she noticed the security guards slowly moving toward them.

"Eric,

what is going on? Where is your money?"

"It's... it's Claire," Eric stammered,

sweat breaking out along his hairline,

ruining his meticulously styled appearance.

"She froze the cards."

"She can't do that!" Vanessa gasped,

her eyes darting around the lobby in horror as wealthy guests began to turn and stare.

"You're her husband! You have rights!"

"The cards were in her name!" Eric shouted,

his voice cracking under the sudden weight of terror.

"Everything was in her name,

Vanessa! The cards,

the accounts,

the credit lines!"

"What about your salary account?" Vanessa demanded,

her hand tightening on his arm until her nails dug through his jacket.

"Your bank account!"

"I... I transferred my salary to the joint account last week to cover my car payment!" Eric confessed,

his face pale as chalk.

"I only have six hundred dollars in my personal checking account!"

The head of hotel security,

a tall man in a dark suit with an earpiece,

stepped forward,

his expression stern and unyielding.

"Mr. Dawson," the officer said,

his voice low and commanding.

"If you cannot settle the outstanding bill of fourteen thousand dollars immediately,

we will be forced to involve the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for theft of services."

Vanessa let out a small,

pitiful shriek,

dropping her white roses onto the floor.

"Police? No! You can't arrest us! We just got married!"

"Ma'am,

the resort does not accept marriage certificates as payment," the security officer replied coldly.

Eric looked around frantically,

searching for an exit,

for a loophole,

for any way out of the trap he had walked into with his eyes wide open.

He had thought he was the master of the game,

leaving his older,

boring wife for her younger,

prettier sister,

reclaiming his freedom in a haze of champagne and neon lights.

He had expected to return home to a broken woman whom he could easily manipulate into a favorable divorce settlement.

Instead,

he was stranded in the middle of a desert,

with a useless piece of gold in his hand,

a hysterical new bride beside him,

and the threat of a jail cell hanging over his head.

He pulled out his phone again,

trying desperately to log into his personal bank app using the hotel’s public Wi-Fi.

Access Denied.

Security credentials changed.

A cold drop of sweat rolled down his spine.

Claire hadn't just turned off the tap.

She had drained the entire pool,

May you like

dismantled the pipes,

and left him suffocating in the heat of his own hubris.
