Chapter 11 - The Federal Warrant and the Public Raid

At six o'clock on a freezing Thursday morning,

the fog hung low over the industrial outskirts of the city.

The streetlights flickered against the damp asphalt,

casting long,

shadowy streaks across the parking lot of a dilapidated roadside diner.

Inside a cracked vinyl booth near the back kitchen doors,

Eric Dawson sat staring at a lukewarm cup of black coffee,

his hands trembling so violently that the dark liquid sloshed over the rim of the thick ceramic mug.

Vanessa sat across from him,

her face pale,

her eyes rimmed with swollen red circles,

her hair matted and unwashed.

She was wearing a dirty grey hoodie she had bought for twelve dollars at a gas station,

a grotesque contrast to the designer silk outfits she used to flaunt on social media.

Between them on the Formica tabletop lay a velvet jewelry pouch containing Vanessa's last piece of luxury,

a two-carat diamond ring Eric had bought her four months ago during a secret weekend trip to Chicago.

"He will only give us twelve hundred dollars for it," Vanessa whispered,

her voice trembling with hysterical anger,

her fingers clutching the edge of the table.

"Twelve hundred dollars,

Eric! That ring cost twelve thousand dollars on Claire’s American Express card!"

"Be quiet,

Vanessa!" Eric snapped,

his voice low,

raspy,

and laced with toxic desperation.

"The pawn shop owner knows we're desperate."

"He knows we don't have receipts."

"If we don't take the twelve hundred dollars,"

"we can't pay for the rental car,"

"we can't buy gas,"

"and we will be sleeping on the street by tonight!"

"I can't sleep in the car again!" Vanessa cried out,

tears streaming down her dirt-streaked cheeks,

making small pale tracks through her heavy foundation.

"My back hurts,"

"my clothes smell like exhaust fumes,"

"and my mother isn't answering her phone anymore!"

"Your mother is broke!" Eric spat back,

glaring at her with pure venom across the small table.

"She called me three hours ago screaming that her Mercedes was towed from her driveway!"

"She has no money,"

"she has no power,"

"and she is just as useless as you are!"

"Don't you dare talk about my mother like that!" Vanessa shrieked,

her voice rising above the quiet murmur of the early morning diner patrons.

"You lied to me!"

"You told me you had millions in private offshore accounts!"

"You told me Claire was just a stupid figurehead who signed whatever papers you put in front of her!"

"She was!" Eric yelled,

slamming his palm onto the table,

making the silverware rattle against the glass napkin holder.

"She was quiet for fifteen years!"

"She never checked the underlying corporate deeds!"

"She never questioned the line-item expenses!"

"How was I supposed to know she kept separate legal ledgers with Arthur Vance?"

Before Vanessa could shout back,

the heavy glass doors at the front of the diner burst open with a loud,

shattering crash.

Cold morning air rushed into the warm room,

bringing with it the sharp,

blaring wail of multiple emergency sirens.

Four heavy black SUV vehicles pulled up directly onto the concrete sidewalk outside,

their high-beam headlights flashing blinding white light through the rain-spattered windows.

Dozens of armed men in tactical gear,

wearing heavy black vests emblazoned with bright yellow letters spelling FBI,

flooded into the restaurant.

"Federal agents! Nobody move!" a loud,

booming voice echoed through the diner,

shattering the quiet morning atmosphere.

Patrons gasped,

dropping their forks,

while cooks in the back kitchen threw their hands into the air.

Eric froze,

his eyes widening in sheer,

unadulterated terror as his heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Special Agent Marcus Sterling walked through the center aisle,

holding a crisp white paper folder in his gloved hands,

his eyes locked directly onto Eric Dawson.

"Eric Dawson," Agent Sterling announced,

his tone cold,

precise,

and utterly devoid of pity.

"Vanessa Miller,"

"you are both under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant issued by the United States District Court."

"What?" Eric stammered,

his hands flying up into the air as two armed federal officers grabbed his shoulders,

yanking him violently out of the vinyl booth.

"This is a mistake!" Eric screamed,

his voice cracking into a high-pitched panic.

"This is a civil domestic dispute! My wife is setting me up!"

"My wife is crazy!"

"You have no right to touch me!"

"Save it for the magistrate,

Mr. Dawson," Agent Sterling said,

stepping closer and looking down at him.

"You are charged with 18 U.S. Code Section 1344,"

"Federal Bank Fraud,"

"18 U.S. Code Section 1343,"

"Wire Fraud,"

"Aggravated Identity Theft,"

"and Interstate Conspiracy to Commit Grand Larceny."

Vanessa let out a blood-curdling shriek as female federal agents seized her arms,

forcing her hands behind her back and snapping cold,

heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

"No! Get off me!" Vanessa screamed,

kicking her legs wildly,

knocking the velvet jewelry pouch off the table,

sending the diamond ring rolling across the dirty tile floor.

"I didn't do anything!"

"It was Eric!"

"He made me sign the papers!"

"He forged the signature!"

"He told me it was legal!"

"Shut up,

Vanessa!" Eric roared as he was forced down onto his knees,

his face pressed firmly against the greasy floor tiles right beside a puddle of spilled coffee.

"Don't say another word!"

Outside the glass diner doors,

flashing red and blue lights illuminated the entire street block.

Local news cameras,

tipped off by public federal docket filings,

were already lined up along the sidewalk,

their heavy telephoto lenses zooming in through the windows.

The cameras captured every detail of the humiliating collapse.

Eric Dawson,

the former high-flying financial analyst,

pinned to a diner floor in dirty clothes,

screaming at his new bride.

Vanessa Miller,

the former aspiring model,

sobbing hysterically as her face was pressed against the glass door while being escorted out in steel chains.

As the heavy metal doors of the federal transport van slammed shut,

locking them into total darkness,

the reality of their greed finally solidified.

They were no longer playing games in Las Vegas.

May you like

They were state property now,

headed straight into the unyielding machinery of federal justice.
