Chapter 5 - The Mask Slips

The silence that followed was suffocating.
Sabrina was free. Vanguard had executed a military-precision extraction right in the middle of Manhattan.
"She’s coming for Lily," Grace stated without a shred of hesitation. "She failed her primary mission, but she can't leave the country without those encrypted drives. And she knows Lily is the only key."
"What do you mean, Lily is the key?" Ethan asked, panic threading through his words. "The vault is in Switzerland!"
"The vault requires biometric verification," Grace explained, pulling up a digital interface on her phone and linking it to the study’s wall-mounted monitor. "Victoria didn't just use passwords, Ethan. She encoded Lily’s retinal pattern and a childhood audio passphrase into the vault's fail-safe protocol. Vanguard needs Lily alive long enough to unlock that vault, or dead with Sabrina legally recognized as her sole surviving executor."
Ethan rounded the desk, his hands balled into white-knuckled fists. "We leave. Right now. I’ll call my pilot. We’ll take the Gulfstream to my private island in the South Pacific."
"No," Grace said sharply.
"No? That’s my daughter in the next room!" Ethan shouted, his composure shattering. "I am not sitting here waiting for mercenaries to kick down my front door!"
"Ethan, listen to me!" Grace gripped the lapels of his tuxedo jacket, forcing him to look directly into her eyes. Her grip was iron, her voice steady as bedrock. "If you try to move Lily to an airport right now, you’re playing on their battlefield. They’ll have spotters at Teterboro, JFK, and Newark. They’ll hit your motorcade in an intersection where you have zero cover. You don't run from an ambush. You fortify, you set the trap, and you make them fight on your terms."
Ethan looked into Grace’s clear, unflinching eyes. In all his years of navigating cutthroat boardrooms, he had never met someone who radiated such absolute certainty in the face of death.
He slowly nodded, letting out a ragged breath. "What do we do?"
"Agent Chen," Grace commanded, turning toward the FBI agent. "I need an immediate federal communications blackout on this building. Cut all external Wi-Fi, spoof the cellular tower signals on this block, and reroute the Caldwell internal servers through a secure proxy. If Sabrina has trackers inside this penthouse, I want them broadcasting static."
"On it," Chen said, pulling her tactical radio from her belt and exiting the study.
"Vance," Grace continued, "keep the NYPD perimeter three blocks away. If Vanguard sees a dozen patrol cars with flashing lights, they won't come in. They’ll wait, regroup, and strike when Lily is somewhere less defensible. We need them to think the penthouse is lightly guarded."
Vance hesitated. "You’re using yourself and Mr. Caldwell as bait?"
"I’m using this entire penthouse as a kill zone," Grace replied coldly.
Once Vance left the room, Ethan looked at Grace, his throat tight. "You’re risking your life for us. Why? You already did your job. You saved Lily at the wedding. You could walk away."
Grace paused, her expression softening for a fleeting second.
"When my fiancé died," she said quietly, "I wasn't there to stop it. I was three thousand miles away, filing reports at headquarters while he bled out in an alley in Bucharest. For eighteen months, I felt like a ghost walking through an empty world." She looked toward the adjoining bedroom where Lily slept under the watchful eye of a female operative. "Then I met your daughter. She didn't speak, but when she looked at me, she saw someone who understood what it meant to have your whole world stolen from you. I’m not letting them take her, Ethan. Not while I’m breathing."
Ethan reached out, his fingers lightly brushing Grace’s bruised hand. "Thank you, Grace."
A soft, sharp chime echoed through the penthouse’s automated control panel.
The lights flickered once. Twice.
May you like
Then, the entire Fifth Avenue building plunged into total, suffocating darkness.
