Chapter 13 - The Return of the Snake

The past rarely stays buried, especially when it is fueled by greed and wounded pride.

Four months had passed since I stripped Vincent Moretti of everything he owned.

The city of Chicago was running smoothly under the iron grip of the Bennett syndicate.

I had almost completely forgotten about the pathetic existence of Sophia Reynolds.

She was a distant memory, a minor footnote in the grand history of my ascension to power.

But cockroaches have a unique ability to survive even the most devastating nuclear fallout.

It was a rainy Thursday afternoon when my head of intelligence placed a heavy file on my desk.

He informed me that a private jet had just landed at O'Hare International Airport.

The passengers were a notorious Russian oligarch named Viktor Volkov and his new American fiancé.

I opened the file and stared at the high-resolution surveillance photographs taken on the tarmac.

Stepping off the plane, wearing a ridiculously expensive fur coat, was Sophia Reynolds.

She looked incredibly smug, clinging to the arm of the hulking, heavily tattooed Russian billionaire.

Viktor Volkov was not just a legitimate businessman; he was a high-ranking member of the Bratva.

He controlled a massive empire of weapons smuggling and human trafficking in Eastern Europe.

Intelligence reports indicated that Viktor was looking to establish a permanent foothold in the American Midwest.

He needed a local guide, someone who intimately knew the weaknesses of the Chicago syndicates.

Sophia, desperate to claw her way back into high society, had convinced Viktor that she held the keys to the city.

She had undoubtedly fed him exaggerated stories about the collapse of the Morettis.

She likely painted the Bennetts as a weak, vulnerable target ripe for a hostile takeover.

She thought she had found a bigger, stronger monster to hide behind.

She thought she was returning to Chicago as a conquering queen to exact her revenge on me.

Julian walked into my office, his eyes dark with the promise of immediate violence.

He wanted to ambush their motorcade before they even reached their downtown hotel.

He stated that allowing a Bratva boss to breathe Chicago air was a direct insult to our sovereignty.

I raised my hand, silencing my brother’s aggressive instincts.

I told him that killing a Russian oligarch in cold blood would start an international syndicate war.

We needed to handle this with surgical precision, not a sledgehammer.

I wanted Viktor to realize exactly what kind of useless liability he had brought into my city.

I instructed Julian to let them check into their penthouse suite at the Grand Meridian.

It was poetic justice that she was returning to the exact same hotel where my marriage had ended.

I ordered our men to place the hotel under twenty-four-hour invisible surveillance.

We monitored their phone calls, tracked their movements, and analyzed Viktor’s local contacts.

Viktor’s primary goal was to secure the southern shipping docks to import his illegal weaponry.

He did not realize that the Bennetts owned every single square inch of those docks.

Sophia had convinced him that the dockworkers could be easily bribed or intimidated.

She set up a massive, secret meeting between Viktor and the head of the longshoreman’s union.

She promised Viktor that this meeting would secure his American empire.

I smiled as I read the intercepted text messages arranging the meeting.

Sophia was about to learn that standing next to a powerful man does not make you powerful.

It merely makes you a target in a war you do not understand.

I picked up my secure phone and dialed the head of the union.

May you like

I gave him very specific, very clear instructions for his meeting with the dangerous Russian.

I was going to build a beautiful trap, and Sophia was going to walk Viktor directly into it.
