Chapter 3 - THE BATTLE LINE IS DRAWN

Martin Bell cleared his throat,

commanding the room back to procedural reality.

“Given the new disclosures regarding paternity,”

Martin announced,

“we are immediately amending our filing from a standard dissolution to a contested proceeding involving corporate fraud,

dissipation of marital assets,

and emergency child custody.”

Grant’s jaw clenched so hard I could see the muscle jump beneath his skin.

“You won’t survive a protracted legal battle with Ashford Capital,”

Grant said,

his tone shifting from personal shock back into corporate predator mode.

“My legal team has retainers with every top-tier firm between Wall Street and Washington.”

“Perhaps,”

Martin replied calmly,

folding his hands over his briefcase.

“However,

Mr. Ashford,

our filings have already been submitted to Judge Sterling’s clerk electronically while you were staring at your son.”

Grant’s hand twitched toward his empty place on the table where his phone had fallen.

“You pre-filed?”

“In matters of high-net-worth divorce involving hidden liquidity,”

Martin said with a faint,

cold smile,

“preemptive filing is standard procedure when dealing with sophisticated defendants.”

Vanessa stood up abruptly,

her chair scraping loudly against the wooden floor.

“I am done being a prop in your corporate games,

Grant,”

she said,

her voice shaking with humiliation and sudden realization.

“You knew about the baby,

didn’t you?

You knew she was carrying your legitimate heir while you were stringing me along with promises of a wedding in Monaco.”

“Vanessa,

sit down,”

Grant commanded,

his voice dropping an octave into pure intimidation.

“Don’t make a mistake you can’t undo.”

“A mistake?”

Vanessa laughed hysterically,

her diamond earrings catching the harsh fluorescent lights.

“My entire relationship with you was built on your lie that you were completely unencumbered!”

She turned her venomous gaze toward me.

“And you—

you knew he was seeing me,

didn’t you?”

“I knew he was a liar,”

I answered smoothly,

rocking Noah gently against my chest as the infant let out another soft sigh.

“Whether it was you,

or the woman before you,

or the countless interns whose non-disclosure agreements are sitting in Grant’s corporate safe—

it was never about the individual mistress,

Vanessa.

It was about the rot at the center of your billionaire boyfriend.”

Grant stood up then,

towering over the conference table,

his six-foot-two frame radiating suppressed rage.

“This meeting is adjourned,”

Grant declared,

glaring down at Martin and me.

“We will settle this in court.”

“You’re welcome to try,

Grant,”

I said,

standing up with Noah securely strapped to my chest,

my posture unflinching.

“But remember—

every empire is built on foundations.

And yours is currently resting on a newborn’s birth certificate.”
