Chapter 5 - The Silent Counterattack

The rest of the day dragged on like a slow,

agonizing march toward an inevitable execution.

Elise stayed until the late afternoon,

hovering over me like a vulture waiting for the final breath,

constantly offering me water and asking invasive questions about my state of mind.

I answered in monosyllables,

staring blankly at the television screen,

while my mind raced through a thousand different scenarios,

each one ending in a violent,

explosive confrontation.

When she finally left,

claiming she had an evening yoga class to attend,

the house plunged into a suffocating,

heavy silence.

I immediately ran upstairs to the nursery,

scooping Julian into my arms,

holding his warm,

fragile body against my chest as I paced the floor.

"I am not going to let them take you,"

I whispered into his soft hair,

rocking him gently as he cooed in response.

"Mommy is going to fix this,

I promise you."

I laid him back in his crib,

pulling out my phone to review the pictures I had taken in Nicholas’s office.

The evidence was damning,

but it was entirely useless if I went to the police right now.

Nicholas was a highly respected corporate lawyer with deep pockets,

powerful friends,

and a flawless public reputation.

If a hysterical,

allegedly unstable woman walked into a police station claiming her husband and therapist were conspiring to frame her,

they would immediately call Nicholas to come pick me up,

effectively handing me over to my executioner.

I needed someone on the outside,

someone who operated in the shadows,

someone who despised Nicholas just as much as I currently did.

My mind instantly flashed to Marcus Vance,

a relentless,

morally gray private investigator Nicholas had fired two years ago after a bitter dispute over a corporate espionage case.

Nicholas had ruined Marcus's reputation in the high-end legal community,

costing him millions in contracts,

and Marcus had sworn revenge before being forcibly escorted from the building.

He was the perfect ally,

a man with the skills to dig up dirt and the motivation to destroy my husband.

I knew Nicholas monitored our home network,

my phone,

and my laptop,

so I could not use any of my own devices to contact Marcus.

I went into the basement,

digging through boxes of old electronics until I found an outdated,

pre-paid burner phone I had used during a construction site project years ago.

I plugged it into a hidden outlet behind a storage rack,

praying the battery would still hold a charge.

While it powered up,

I heard the distinct sound of Nicholas’s luxury sedan pulling into the driveway,

the gravel crunching under the heavy tires.

My heart leaped into my throat.

He was home early,

hours earlier than his usual schedule,

a sudden change in routine that sent alarm bells ringing through my entire body.

I frantically shoved the burner phone under a pile of old winter coats,

sprinting silently up the basement stairs and emerging into the kitchen just as the front door swung open.

Nicholas walked in,

his suit jacket draped over his arm,

a dark,

unreadable expression on his handsome face.

"You are home early,"

I said,

forcing my voice to tremble slightly,

leaning heavily against the granite counter.

"I wanted to check on my beautiful wife,"

he replied,

walking toward me,

his eyes scanning the kitchen,

looking for anything out of place.

"Elise said you had a rough day,

that you were locking doors and acting confused."

My blood ran cold.

Elise had called him,

she had reported the locked office door,

and Nicholas had rushed home to investigate.

He stepped closer,

invading my personal space,

his imposing figure towering over me,

casting a dark shadow that seemed to swallow the light in the room.

"Are you feeling confused,

Sophie?"

he whispered,

reaching out to grip my chin firmly,

forcing me to look up into his cold,

calculating eyes.

"I... I just got turned around,"

I stammered,

letting my lower lip tremble,

playing the role of the broken bird to perfection.

"My head hurts,

Nicholas,

the pills make everything so blurry."

He stared at me for a long,

terrifying moment,

his grip on my chin tightening painfully,

searching my eyes for a lie.

Then,

the tension broke,

and he smiled,

releasing me and stepping back.

"That means they are working,

my love,"

he said smoothly,

"You just need more time,

and I am going to make sure you get all the help you need."

He turned and walked upstairs,

presumably to check the safe,

leaving me alone in the kitchen,

shaking with a mixture of terror and exhilarating anticipation.

He thought he had me completely subdued,

trapped in a cage of his own design,

May you like

but he had no idea that I had just found the key.

The war had officially begun,
