Chapter 11 - The Psychiatrist's Confession

I scheduled an emergency appointment with Dr. Arthur Evans,

claiming that my symptoms had suddenly worsened,

that I was experiencing terrifying hallucinations,

and that Nicholas was deeply concerned about my immediate safety.

The receptionist fit me in at the end of the day,

her voice dripping with that same fake sympathy I had come to despise,

treating me like a fragile piece of glass that was already cracking.

I arrived at his upscale clinic in the heart of the city,

dressed in a baggy sweater and faded jeans,

making sure my hair looked unkempt and wild,

playing the part of the rapidly deteriorating wife to absolute perfection.

The waiting room was entirely empty,

smelling of expensive lavender diffusers and stale magazines,

a sterile environment designed to make wealthy people feel comfortable while their minds were dissected.

Dr. Evans opened his heavy oak door,

greeting me with a practiced,

warm smile that did not reach his cold,

calculating eyes.

"Sophie,

please come in,

Nicholas called ahead to tell me how worried he was about you today,"

he said smoothly,

gesturing for me to take a seat on the plush leather sofa in the center of his expansive office.

I walked in slowly,

keeping my head down,

clutching a large designer handbag tightly against my chest,

as if it were the only thing anchoring me to reality.

The door clicked shut behind us,

locking the two of us inside the soundproof room,

isolating us from the rest of the world.

He sat down in his large leather armchair,

crossing his legs elegantly,

pulling out a silver pen and a fresh notepad,

ready to document more of my fabricated insanity.

"Tell me what has been happening,

Sophie,

Nicholas mentioned you were seeing things that are not there,"

he prompted,

his tone gentle,

coaxing,

like a hunter luring a wounded animal into a snare.

I took a deep,

shuddering breath,

letting the silence stretch on for a long,

uncomfortable moment,

before I slowly lifted my head,

dropping the facade completely,

allowing my eyes to lock onto his with a fierce,

unrelenting clarity.

"I am not hallucinating,

Arthur,"

I said,

my voice steady,

cold,

and entirely devoid of the weakness he expected to hear.

His pen stopped moving,

hovering above the paper,

as a flicker of genuine confusion crossed his meticulously groomed features.

"Sophie,

denial is a common part of the process,

we need to be honest with each other if I am going to help you,"

he replied,

trying to maintain his professional,

authoritative demeanor,

but I could see the slight tightening of his jaw.

I reached into my oversized handbag,

my fingers grasping the thick,

padded envelope I had retrieved from the bus terminal locker,

and pulled it out,

tossing it heavily onto the glass coffee table between us.

"I am being completely honest,

Arthur,

which is why I brought some reading material for you,"

I stated,

leaning back into the sofa,

crossing my arms over my chest,

watching him like a hawk.

He looked at the envelope,

hesitation flickering in his eyes,

before he slowly reached out,

opening the flap,

and sliding the contents onto the table.

The first thing he saw was the banking record,

the undeniable proof of the offshore wire transfers from the shell corporation controlled by my husband,

highlighted in bright,

neon yellow ink.

The color drained from his face instantly,

leaving him looking like a freshly exhumed corpse,

his mouth falling open in a silent gasp of absolute terror.

"Where did you get this?"

he whispered,

his voice cracking,

the professional psychiatrist entirely gone,

replaced by a desperate,

cornered criminal.

"My private investigator is very thorough,

Arthur,

and he has copies of everything,

including the forged psychiatric evaluation you signed,

and the audio recordings of your little chats with Nicholas,"

I explained calmly,

enjoying the sight of his complete and utter devastation,

savoring the power I finally held over one of my tormentors.

"Sophie,

you don't understand,

Nicholas is a very powerful man,

he forced me into this,"

he stammered,

sweat beginning to bead on his forehead,

his hands shaking so violently he dropped the papers back onto the table.

"You are a degenerate gambler who embezzled from his own partners,

Arthur,

Nicholas didn't force you to do anything,

he simply bought you,

and you willingly sold my sanity to cover your debts,"

I spat,

the venom in my voice slicing through the quiet room like a serrated blade.

"I can destroy you right now,

I can take this to the medical board,

to the police,

to the federal authorities,

and you will spend the rest of your miserable life rotting in a federal penitentiary."

He dropped his head into his hands,

a pathetic whimper escaping his throat,

a man who realized his entire world had just collapsed in a matter of seconds.

"What do you want?"

he asked,

looking up at me with tears welling in his terrified eyes,

completely broken,

completely subjugated to my will.

"I want a full,

notarized confession,

detailing everything Nicholas instructed you to do,

every fake diagnosis,

every discussion about the drugs he has been feeding me,

everything,"

I demanded,

leaning forward,

invading his space,

making sure he felt the full weight of my wrath.

"If I do that,

Nicholas will ruin me anyway,

he will leak the embezzlement records,"

Evans cried,

panic making his chest heave uncontrollably.

"If you do not do it,

I will ruin you before the sun goes down today,

and I promise you,

my destruction will be far more immediate and far more painful,"

I countered,

my eyes boring into his soul,

leaving no room for negotiation,

no room for escape.

"You have twenty-four hours to draft the confession and hand it over to Marcus Vance,

my investigator,

or the police get the offshore account details,"

I finished,

standing up,

straightening my sweater,

looking down at the pathetic man cowering in his expensive chair.

I turned and walked out of the office,

leaving the documents on the table,

May you like

knowing he was too terrified to destroy them,

knowing I had just secured the ultimate weapon to destroy my husband's grand design.
